    Squirrel Poop: How to Identify & Remove It Safely

    If you’ve detected a squirrel infestation in your attic recently, be sure that there are loads of squirrel turds around. It could be an ordinary problem, but squirrels are carriers of various diseases, and many of them are transmitted through squirrel poop and urine.

    This means that you should get ready not only to deal with the infestation but also to get rid of feces in a safe way.

    Prepare goggles, face mask (preferably a respirator), gloves, and hand overalls (or a long-sleeve shirt) to avoid any type of contact with spores and bacteria.

    That’s a real biological hazard, so your approach must be serious. But the first thing you should do is read my guide to deal with the problem properly.

    Squirrel Feces: Easy Extermination Guide

    Squirrel Poop

    In this guide, I covered all the important aspects of the problem. Read it to learn how to identify infestations and squirrel droppings and clean the contaminated areas. Don’t forget about safety rules, and learn how to manage squirrels to avoid reinfestations.

    What does squirrel poop look like?

    Being able to tell squirrel scat from feces of other rodents is a key factor in deciding on which control method you have to apply. Unlike light brown, reddish, or rusty rat scat, squirrel poop is usually dark brown and black. However, it gets lighter over time, which makes it harder to distinguish by color.

    The diet of these rodents differs a lot, so the shape of fecal pellets is also different. While rat scat is usually quite narrow and has pointed ends, squirrels make thicker pellets with rounded ends.

    Squirrel pellets are usually about 3/8 inches long and about 1/8 inch in diameter.

    They are a bit longer and have a thickening point in the center. I recommend you to download a few squirrel poop images to simplify identification or use pictures of squirrel poop from the article. Another sign that the feces are left by squirrels is their number. Other rodents leave fewer feces around a single site.

    Squirrel poop diseases

    Lots of Squirrel Poop

    Similar to other rodents, squirrels transmit a number of diseases through feces. The most dangerous of them is leptospirosis. It can be spread by both feces and urine and lives up to 180 days in a contaminated area.

    Intoxication effects are usually quite mild but can also lead to lethal respiratory problems if you are in a risk group. Another dangerous and common disease transmitted by squirrels is salmonella.

    It may cause heavy diarrhea and vomiting, but lethality is very low. Besides, contaminated sites can be infested with ticks and fleas that travel on squirrel bodies. They can easily get onto your clothes and infest your home, so the best solution is to dispose of the clothes you wore or take it to the dry cleaner asap.

    How to clean squirrel feces?

    When you find a contaminated site, you have to clean it thoroughly. Squirrels leave quite a lot of feces, so the best way to gather them is to use a powerful filter vacuum that uses disposable bags as storage.

    If you see scat that stack to the floor, use a chisel knife to cut them off. When the feces are removed, you have to dispose of them immediately to avoid contamination of other spots around the house.

    But what to do with urine spots and invisible leftovers? The smell of pheromones will keep attracting squirrels and other rodents to the place, so it’s important to use a disinfectant spray throughout the entire place and make the place safe again.

    After that, find all the possible entry points to the attic or cavity and seal them firmly. Otherwise, the rodents will get back to the site as soon as they find it attractive again.

    How to identify an infestation?

    Squirrel infestation isn’t too difficult to identify as these animals don’t try to be stealth at all. When the infestation takes place, you may hear strange noises, such as scampering and jumping in the attic, scratching in wall cavities, or down the chimney. The next sign is a squirrel scat here and there. You already know how to identify it, so it won’t be a problem.

    Other signs include:

    • damaged entry points – squirrels can chew through materials (even through metal) to get inside structures;
    • interior damage – squirrels that get into your attic, will tear up insulation, shred duct works, and, what’s more dangerous, chew the wiring if they find it;
    • Squirrel footprints – it’s quite easy to see them on snow, dust, and mud. If you see tracks around your yard, it’s time to inspect the attic;
    • Strange smell – sometimes, squirrels get stuck and die inside structures. Their corpses cause an awful smell that won’t go unnoticed.

    FAQ on Squirrel Poop

    Flying Squirrel Poop Area

    Here are some brief answers to the most frequent questions that my customers and readers ask. Skim them through to have a better understanding of the problem and feel more fluent.

    Where do squirrels poop?

    Have you ever seen how squirrels go to the bathroom? Apparently not! Actually, they do it in a bit surprising places. I usually find squirrel poop near the feeding, inside their nests, in wall cavities, and in the attics. They tend to organize ‘bathrooms’ in particular places and use these places repeatedly. That’s pretty clever and makes removing the feces easier for us.

    Do I need to worry about squirrel poop where my children play?

    Given that squirrel scat can transmit dangerous diseases, you shouldn’t let your children play where squirrels poop. Stop the infestation, remove scat, and sanitize the area before letting your children and pets inside.

    How long is squirrel feces dangerous?

    Squirrel droppings are soft only during the first hours, but when they dry, the risk of inhaling droplets rises. This means that the feces are dangerous all the time. Even though infections like salmonella last only up to 7 days, you never know how old each pallet is, so precautions are necessary.

    Good Luck!

    With all the knowledge you have now, you can go and solve the problem once and for all without any risk. Although squirrel excrement is quite dangerous and hard to remove, you can prevent reinfestations in your attic quite easily and for a very long time.

    Is it the first time you face a squirrel infestation? If not, tell me what methods you applied, and we’ll see if there was a mistake that led to a reinfestation. If you have any questions left after reading, you’re welcome to ask me via the comments section. For more guides on dealing with animal poop, stay tuned to my blog.

  • Comprehensive Snake Poop Review: How to Identify and Dispose Of

    Comprehensive Snake Poop Review: How to Identify and Dispose Of

    It is not uncommon for southern states to experience issues with snake infestations. Snakes tend to seek out convenient shelters, such as wall cavities, foundations, and cellars, to hide in.

    The occurrence of infestations tends to increase during the winter months and after floods. Even if the winter in your region is mild, snakes may still enter your home in search of shelter and food.

    If you are aware of a potential infestation in your area, it is essential to be knowledgeable about identifying snake feces. Being able to identify these droppings can help you detect and address an infestation before it becomes a major problem. My guide can provide helpful information on this topic.

    Snake Poop: Easy Identification Guide

    In this guide, I covered all the aspects that are needed for snake poop identification and secure disposal. Read it attentively to avoid making mistakes as they may expose you and your household to danger.

    What does snake poop look like?

    Identifying snake feces is typically easier than identifying droppings left by rodents. Snake droppings usually have a tubular shape with a cord-like appearance and may have either an even shape or an irregular surface. Most snakes’ droppings are dark in color but may have lighter streaks of urine present.

    It is not uncommon for people to mistake snake droppings for bird droppings, which is why it can be helpful to have pictures of snake feces for comparison. It is also advisable to examine the feces more closely to determine if there are any hair or bones from the snake’s prey present.

    snake-poop

    If there are large snakes in your area, it is important to be aware that their droppings may be larger in size and contain a significant amount of liquid urine. For instance, when a python defecates, the resulting droppings are often so substantial that it is difficult to mistake them for the feces of other animals. Therefore, it is important to keep this in mind if there are large snakes present in your environment.

    What does copperhead snake poop look like?

    Copperhead snakes are venomous snakes widely spread in the US South. Unfortunately, their feces look pretty much the same as other snakes’ waste. You can only guess by the size of scat as it’s rather big.

    Are snake turds dangerous?

    Snakes are predators and eat frogs, mice, lizards, and other animals that are known for spreading various diseases. The most common of them is salmonella. Other known snake-transmitted diseases include cryptosporidiosis (a parasitic infection) and rarer threats.

    Salmonella lives for around a week in feces, while oocysts and cysts of cryptosporidiosis can survive for many months, depending on the conditions. When turds dry, they may dust when you touch them and lead to inhaling of bacteria.

    snake defecating

    How to clean snake feces?

    You shouldn’t garter snake feces without respective protection. It’s quite easy to inhale bacteria when you deal with dry turds as well as to transmit them by bare hands. Before cleaning the area, you should fear rubber or garden gloves, a long-sleeve top, goggles, and a face mask to prevent inhaling and protect mucous.

    In addition, you should wear thick snake-proof boots that will protect your ankles from bites. Avoid stepping onto areas if you’re not sure that they’re clean and safe.

    Snakes may hide in tall grass, under various debris, and structures. If you see one, don’t try to disturb or trap it with bare hands. Even if you think that you will succeed, a snake can react faster and bite you.

    How to check for snake infestation?

    It’s quite difficult to identify a snake infestation as signs of snake presence aren’t always evident. Unlike mice, serpents don’t leave almost any trace behind and make noise only if they fall. Even if they get into your house, they may remain stealthy for moths. Still, it’s not impossible if you know what to pay attention to.

    Signs of snakes at your household include:

    • Snake skin – all snakes shed their skin when they grow. You may find dry skins near entrances into the walls of your house of other structures around the yard.
    • Tracks – slither tracks can be found in dusty areas, on sand, or mud. They’re quite easy to identificate.
    • Smell – many snakes have a strong odor, so if you notice a strange smell in the crawlspace or other rooms, you should look for snakes.
    • Scat – you already know how to identify snake scat, so start dealing with the problem when you see them.

    Time for Inspection

    Now you know everything to inspect your property for signs of a snake infestation and can remove snake feces without health risks. Always be careful to avoid snake bites and hire professionals if you don’t have the required skills for proper snake relocation.

    Have you ever faced a snake infestation before? What did you do to stop it and remove snake feces? Share your experience in the comments and ask me questions if you still have them after reading. If you’ve already found feces on your property and they don’t belong to snakes, read my guides on the poop of other pests to see what’s your enemy.

  • Comprehensive Bat Poop Review: How to Identify and Remove It

    Comprehensive Bat Poop Review: How to Identify and Remove It

    In general, bats are beneficial flying mammals that control populations of insects on sites. In most cases, we don’t notice them as they are nocturnal animals.

    However, if migrating bats invade your attic, you won’t be pleased at all. They can be really noisy and produce huge piles or fecal pellets near the roost area. Close proximity to bats can lead to contacts with bat poop that is really dangerous for both people and pets because of bat-transmitted diseases.

    Animals and children may also touch a bat if they get interested. Such a meeting has very high chances to end up with rabies, so you have to deal with such infestations as fast as possible.

    Bat Guano: Easy Extermination Guide

    batguanotouch

    In this guide, I share all the important facts about bat scat along with bat poop images. Read it attentively to be ready to deal with a problem proactively. Still, I don’t recommend fighting with an infestation without professional help as it’s risky.

    What does bat poop look like?

    Bat scat is usually dropped from the roosting point on your roof. They accumulate in large black piles. Single pellets look like long thin granules with a shiny and speckled coloring.

    That’s because most bats eat insects, and their wings don’t break down completely in the digestive system. You can see how they look on the bat poop picture or google for more.

    bat feces

    What disease can you get from bat poop?

    Bat droppings disease list isn’t very long, but is really hazardous. It includes 3 dangerous diseases, such as rabies, histoplasmosis, and a wide range of ectoparasites, including fleas, flies, mites, true bugs, chiggers, and ticks.

    While bat parasites rarely change their host and catch on humans or animals, rabies and histoplasmosis are extremely dangerous and can be lethal.

    Droppings from bat

    Both of them can affect humans and pets, so be ready for recognizing histoplasmosis in pets to start treatment on time in case of intoxication. Even though it’s a rare disease in the US, you are very close to it if you have a bat infestation.

    Rabies is a much more common disease that’s very easy to catch through bat guano. The percentage of infected bats is usually below 1%, but you never know which of them is infected and the consequences can be very hard.

    How to clean bat droppings?

    Given that bat poops can contain dangerous diseases, you should protect all your body areas that can be infected through the dust. These include eyes, nose, mouth, and hands as you may touch guano by accident. I recommend wearing:

    • thick latex or gardening gloves to avoid skin contact with poop;
    • Full-face HEPA respirator;
    • Disposable coveralls;
    • clothes with long sleeves and pants.

    If you call a team of professionals to solve the problem, they will most likely use a powerful filter vacuum. You probably don’t have it and will scoop feces into plastic bags.

    In both cases, it’s important to wet down the piles to reduce the amount of dust. Believe me, this material gets very dusty when you disturb it! Add 10% bleach to the spray for better effect and keep spraying it every 5-10 minutes to maintain a low dust level.

    When the work is done, you have to close the bags tightly to prevent the dust from getting out. It’s also recommended to figure out bat guano disposal requirements in your area. You might be required to bring the bags into special locations or bury them on the required depth to prevent the infection spreading.

    It’s also necessary to clean all the equipment thoroughly and get rid of disposable gear. When the work is done, seal all the entrances to the attic with silicone, sheet metal, wood, or plastic. If the airflow is needed, use metal mesh instead.

    How to check for infestation?

    There are several signs that may say that there’s a bat problem. They include:

    • Bats flying around – if bats fly around your property during sunset and sunrise, it can be a sign that they live very closely;
    • Ammonia scent – large bat poop piles have a strong ammonia smell. This means that the problem requires immediate treatment;
    • Dead bats – a true sign that a bat family is somewhere near;
    • Stained entrances – when bats find an entry hole into your house, they start using it frequently, and it covers in black stains;
    • Bats inside the house – it’s an alarm that says hurry up;
      Squeaking sounds and strange noises – same as bats inside;

    Although I recommend calling for professional help, you should apply standard bat management techniques as well.

    Skunk Poop: Methods of Identification & Cleaning

    Skunks are very cute on the outside, but they can cause significant damage to your garden or home. They lead an active lifestyle only at night, so you can identify their presence in your territory by skunk feces. My advice will help you find out what skunk poop looks like and how to get rid of feces safely.

    After all, skunk poop is potentially dangerous for humans and animals. It may contain bacteria, larvae, rabies, and various infections to which the pests are vectors.

    How to Identify Skunk Poops

    Skunk scat appears in your garden, basement, or attic at night, so it is difficult to identify the feces during the daytime. On the outside, they are very similar to cats’ poo. But do not try to clean them up quickly with a normal bag without gloves and a protective mask. It can be skunk droppings!

    Skunk droppings can contain various foodstuffs and remnants of berries, seeds, and plants. These are omnivorous mammals that hunt rats (can be vectors of infection!), eat berries and plants. They are not averse to eating even bats.

    skunk poop

    Take a look at the skunk scat images. The particle is about 1/2 inch in diameter and 1-2 inches long. Unlike the feces of cats, skunks poop is with a variety of food remains. Therefore, the color of poop will never be homogeneous, as will the structure.

    Skunk feces are often crumbly, mushy, or hard. Some of the remains may be light brown, while others are dark or even black. This is the main difference from the feces of cats. Pets poop homogeneous poop, as their diet is balanced and stable.

    skunk droppings

    Skunk scat dangers

    You need accurate skunk scat identification to apply precautions when cleaning up. Skunks are omnivores, so they are often considered as vectors of infection, eating rats, bats, larvae, and worms.

    Direct contact or inhalation of the smell of poop can lead to infection of humans with salmonella, leptospirosis, E. coli, and various bacteria. Some skunk poop pictures may even show small larvae, often found in the animals’ feces. It is disgusting, so you must take precautions.

    Skunk poop feces are also dangerous for pets, especially cats and dogs. They can infect the larvae, after which they will have to be treated for a long time.

    In North America, there are often recorded cases of infection of horses with EPM from skunk feces. This disease has a strong effect on horses’ nervous systems and can destroy their bodies within a few weeks.

    How to clean skunk feces

    You need to clear the area of skunk poop immediately if you have found feces and identified them.

    Step 1 Use the protective gear

    Use a protective mask or respirator with rubber gloves for this. Do not touch feces under any circumstances.

    Step 2: Eliminate the poop properly

    Put the feces in a tightly closed bag and throw them in the trash can. Ensure that dogs or other animals do not have access to the dumpster and cannot get the bag out of there.

    Step 3: Get rid of the gear

    Gloves and other equipment you have used to clean the feces in the bag should also be discarded. The place where the skunk poop was may have been contaminated.

    Step 4: Disinfect the area

    You should use disinfectants to treat the ground’s surface within a radius of 2 meters near the poop. You can use chlorine, alcohol (above 60%), bleaching agents, and strong detergents.

    skunk near a hole

    How to identify skunk poop infections

    You can recognize the infestation of your territory with skunks by several signs:

    • Remains of fruit or other food appear in the garden;
    • There are pits dug in the garden;
    • The lower facade of the building has been bitten or contains traces of destruction;
    • An unpleasant smell of ammonia, typical for skunks.

    Note that skunks are mostly active at night. During the day, you are unlikely to notice them in your garden. It is best to install video cameras with the night mode. This way, you will be able to notice the presence of skunks and identify them.

    Adorable chipmunks with their fluffy tails and beady eyes may look like cartoon characters, but they can wreak havoc on farms and gardens. Their love for nuts, seeds, and fruits is undeniable, but when these delicacies are scarce, they’ll happily munch on vegetables, plants, fungi, and even bird eggs. While they may be cute, they’re not always welcome guests.

    Chipmunk droppings identification

    The main problem is that chipmunk feces look similar to other animals. Besides, another problem appears – many people simply don’t believe that these creatures can poop at all. What does chipmunk poop look like? Check out the main peculiarities:

    • Size: On average, chipmunk scat is tiny. They are less than 0,40 inches. If you watch chipmunk poop images closely, you will notice that they are even smaller than rats.
    • Shape: This poop looks like pellets. The ends are long and pointy.
    • Color: it depends on the food that chipmunks eat. Sometimes it is brown; sometimes it can be black.

    Chipmunk scat dangers

    Did you know that chipmunk poop is just as dangerous as any other omnivore or carnivore scat? Due to their unpredictable diet of scavenging, chipmunk feces may contain a high number of harmful viruses and bacteria. Be cautious around these cute little critters!

    Humans rarely contact directly with this scat, so it is highly unlikely you will get infected. Unless you or your pets touch it. You can receive diseases transmitted by chipmunks from their poop:

    • Leptospirosis spreads through airborne dust. It is a bacterial disease;
    • Salmonellosis – not fatal, but fever, diarrhea, cramps, and nausea can last for up to 7 days;
    • Hantavirus is incredibly contagious. It spreads through inhaling particles with saliva, urine, and droppings of chipmunks.

    How to clean chipmunk feces

    Once chipmunk poop identification is over, and you know what you withstand, you need to clean the territory.

    Follow these simple steps:

    • Wear protective gloves and respirator;
    • Inspect the poop with a stick to make sure that it is dry or not. Sprinkle dry poop with water;
    • Torch the poop in the place unreachable for others;
    • Spray disinfectants on the spot where you have found the poop.

    chipmunk walking

    Is it an infestation?

    It may be an infestation, as usually chipmunks don’t leave their feces anywhere except in their burrows. You may notice it on chipmunk feces pics. Check out for other signs:

    • The freshness of the poop. The fresher it is, the closer chipmunks have built the nest;
    • The quantity of poop. You may find the latrine site of chipmunks. If it is, look for possible burrows.

    FAQ on Chipmunk Droppings

    How much poop does a chipmunk poop at a time?

    It depends on the amount of food chipmunk ate. Usually, it is up to 2-3 pellets. If you find latrine, you will see more poops.

    What color is chipmunk poop?

    It depends on the food chipmunk ate. It can be black or brown. More veggies make it paler.

    How can you tell the difference between chipmunk poop and rat and mice poop?

    Chipmunk’s poop is bigger than mice and paler. It is also thinner and smaller than rat’s feces. They have similar forms. Still, poop identification will not be a problem when it comes to these species.

    Termite Droppings: How to Identify and Remove Them

    Termites are unwelcome guests in any house where there’s something made of wood — that is any house at all. There are many species of these little species, some of which are more common than others. What is similar about them is that they cause destruction to our homes by feasting on wooden walls, floors, and furniture.

    Termite droppings are often the first sign of an infestation that can go unnoticed for a long time since the critters tend to leave the surface of whatever they devour intact. This article explains how to spot and treat termite poop.

    termite under glass

    Termite Excrement Identification

    There are many termite species around the planet. In the USA alone, subterranean, drywood, and dampwood termites are more or less common, causing considerable concern. Although feces don’t vary greatly depending on the species, minor differences in poop color and size, as well as pooping habits exist.

    Before we continue to learn how to spot termite feces, however, let’s deal with a common misunderstanding that exists regarding the topic. It is related to what is referred to as termite frass.

    When you start researching pest droppings, especially in the context of wood-destroying buggers, you might be confused by how some people say frass is another word for droppings and others maintain these are two different things.

    The truth is that frass consists of feces mixed with a lot of other materials. These include finely ground wood powder that’s generated as the termites proceed with their excavation work, mud, etc. The fecal matter that makes it up is liquid in some species.

    This means you’re unlikely to spot it as such regardless of what species you are dealing with; it’s mostly frass that signalizes termite infestation. For the purpose of this article, termite waste is referred to as poop, excrements, feces, and frass interchangeably.

    What Does Termite Poop Look Like

    If you look at termite poop pictures, you’ll notice immediately that the color of what you see varies, but the shape is more or less consistent. In most cases, the frass resembles small granules.

    termite poop, frass

    Those who look closely enough might notice that sometimes termite droppings have a characteristic oval shape, with rounded ends and six indentations in them. Such frass often appears in mounds in places where wood has been destroyed, in particular, outside of wooden objects as termites push their frass out to make room for them in the tunnels.

    This is characteristic of drywood termites, probably one of the most common species to attack our homes along with subterranean termites. The latter, however, don’t tend to leave a lot of frass.

    Apart from the drywood termites droppings, dampwood frass is produced as the insects’ feast on wooden furniture and structures with high water content (hence the name). Luckily, the species is uncommon in people’s homes.

    The color of termite pellets can vary from light, such as sandy, to nearly black. A pile can thus resemble sawdust, sand, or dirt. This depends primarily on the pest’s most recent diet and isn’t helpful in terms of identifying whether the frass is old or new. Frass is often masked by dust, too.

    If you feel like you need to inspect your house for signs of termite infestation, look for droppings on window sills and around the frames, on the floor, particularly under the carpet and in and around cracks and crevices, and on furniture such as beds (this applies if you suspect ceiling damage).

    Termite Excrement Risks

    Just in case you are alarmed that termite droppings are a biological weapon potentially spreading disease, this is nothing but prejudice. However, allergic reactions might occur in sensitized individuals.

    group of termites

    Removing Termite Waste

    Luckily, termite poop is not in and of itself hazardous, so you needn’t treat it like it is. This doesn’t mean you should live it lying where it is, though. The simplest way to proceed is to use your vacuum cleaner to suck it up and dispose of it as you would of normal waste. It’s also advisable to use regular household disinfectants afterwards.

    Remember to appraise the wooden surface/object you’ve found the frass next to after you’ve removed the waste.

    What If I’ve Found Termite Frass in My House?

    Frass is not a sure sign of an ongoing infestation. However, you should look for other symptoms if there’s a pile or more on your property. These are as follows:

    • sagging floors;
    • doors and windows that won’t close or open properly;
    • cracks or little holes in the foundation and/or walls, possibly with paint damage;
    • characteristic mud tubes on the walls;
    • discarded wings;
    • flying termite sightings.

    If you’ve come to believe you have termites, I recommend that you contact a pest control service for professional advice since these pests aren’t the easiest to keep in check.

    Termite Feces FAQ

    In this section, I answer some common questions regarding termite poop in brief terms.

    Are termite droppings harmful?

    They aren’t per se, except they can cause allergic reactions and asthma if you are sensitized, or your immune system is compromised.

    What are the signs of termites in your home?

    Signs of termite infestation include hollow, loose-feeling spots in the wood. You might also come across a termite swarm (not to be confused with ant swarms).

    How do you know if termite droppings are old or new?

    There’s no way to tell how old termite feces are. They don’t usually change color or texture over time, so old and new droppings look largely the same.

    Termite Poop? You’d Better Hurry Up

    Heaps of frass, or fecal matter mixed with wood shavings from consumed objects and mud, are a strong indication you’re dealing with a termite attack. It’s thus essential that you know how to identify the droppings and where to look for them in case you suspect an infestation. Remember that the little critters work slowly but can destroy your property beyond repair if you let them feast on it for a long time!

    Coyote Poop Danger Review [2022 Updated]: Helpful Tips

    Discovering coyote droppings in your yard may be alarming, but it’s important to take action quickly. Coyotes may seem cute, but they are actually dangerous carnivores that have been known to carry diseases like rabies. Even if they typically coexist peacefully with humans, it’s best to take precautions to prevent future encounters.

    Farmers raising chickens, ducks, and other potential coyote food sources should also take measures to keep their poultry out of reach. Remember, coyotes can be a threat to small animals like cats and even dogs. Though they usually shy away from open confrontations with humans, it’s still wise to be vigilant, as they are known to visit yards at night.

    Coyote Poop: Easy Identification Guide

    Are you living in an area with a high coyote population? Don’t be surprised if these elusive creatures make an appearance in your backyard. But before you take action on how to get rid of coyotes, make sure you properly identify the culprit. Not all feces found in your yard belongs to coyotes. Coyote droppings identification

    They are recognized among the feces of other animals. Usually, they contain hair and small bones of animals inside. Pay attention to the next factors:

    • Size. On average, coyote dung is 4 inches long and close to 1 inch in diameter;
    • The shape of the feces is oval. They are rope-like. Also, coyote feces are not soft, mainly because of the hair and bones inside;
    • Color varies from the climate conditions they live at. It is dark during the winter period and bright during the summer. Old scat turns gray.

    Coyote vs. other animals

    Coyotes belong to the same group of canines as dogs and wolves. Their feces look similar to dogs. They are tubular and tapered at the ends. However, coyote poop in the yard is visibly different from the dog’s poop. Coyote’s scat is bigger and darker. Besides, the dog’s poop is soft.

    Coyote scat dangers

    Many residents in coyote-populated areas may be skeptical of the potential hazards, but it’s important to understand the risks. Coyotes may seem harmless, but their feces can carry deadly viruses and bacteria, including the dreaded tapeworm. In fact, 25% of coyotes carry this parasite, making it a serious threat to both animals and humans.

    If you have pets that love to sniff and explore, it’s crucial to remove any coyote scat from your property immediately. Not only does it pose a risk for tapeworm, but it can also carry rabies and other deadly viruses.

    How to clean coyote feces

    You may have already guessed from checking out numerous coyote poop pictures that they contain small particles that can also be dangerous to you. This is why you have to follow simple safety rules removing the feces from your yard.

    Under no circumstances can you take a poop with bare hands. Don’t try to sniff it, and don’t put it close to your face or open skin. Use gloves, shovels, and bags to remove it. Here is a step-by-step instruction:

    • Wear protective gloves and a respirator. You may also wear disposable boots or cover them with something disposable;
    • Sprinkle warm water on the poop if it is dry;
    • Take a shovel and remove the poop. Torch it, so the flame kills tapeworm;
    • Disinfect the territory with the boiled water and disinfectant;
    • Remove gloves and clean hands with soap and hot water. It is also recommended to wash your clothes after the procedure. Wash them separately from anything else.

    Is it an infestation: Quick Checklist

    One of the worst problems is that cysts can develop in the human body for years. Unless it is rabies, signs of infestations may not be revealed for a long time. Call the doctor in case:

    • If you come into direct contact with the substance, as you see on coyote scat images, you need to consult with the doctor.
    • If you have open wounds, the risks to get the disease are even higher.
    • You will notice signs of virus infection in your body due to the high temperature, nausea, headache. Don’t ignore these signs.

    Avoiding the Danger

    Coyotes are wild animals that can’t be controlled by humans. You can’t even predict their behavior in the next moment. However, there is a pattern in it. They come to the territories nearby, without fences, and mark them as their own, leaving scats on the ground.

    This scat is dangerous, as it may be extremely contagious and contain deadly viruses and bacteria. You have to get rid of it before the coyote comes back to leave another one on the same territory. If you are visited by coyotes, share your personal remedies for dealing with them. Did you get rid of their visits?

  • Possum Poop: Complete Identification & Removal Guide

    Possum Poop: Complete Identification & Removal Guide

    Possums can infiltrate your garden or even your home, leaving their poop there — possum poop is like the feces of other pets: cats or small dogs. But cleaning after marsupial mammals is dangerous for humans, so it is essential to distinguish between the animals’ feces.

    In no case you should touch the opossum feces in order not to get infected with several infections. In this article, you will see several possum poop photos with detailed descriptions. Distinguishing between pet poop and possum feces will help you avoid the risk of getting infected with contagious diseases.

    Possum Poop Easy Extermination Guide

    possum-poop

    Externally, these marsupial mammals look very cute. They look like small brown foxes with outstretched noses and funny eyes. Possums are not dangerous to humans, but their poop can be a carrier of various infections:

    Possum droppings are dangerous because these animals are omnivores and often hunt rodents (rats and mice). It is rodents that are vectors of infection so that diseases can be transmitted through the possum scat.

    It is enough to touch the poop or smell it from close range to get infected. There have been periodic deaths in North America and southeastern Canada due to the poop contamination of these mammals.

    Some of the diseases above can be transmitted not only to adults and children but also to pets. Therefore, as soon as you see possum droppings in the garden or your home, you should remove them carefully.

    Possum droppings identification

    It is very difficult to perform a possum droppings identification if there are pets in your house. On the outside, possum droppings are very similar to those of cats or dogs.

    But there are ways to distinguish them. One of the most frequent questions on this subject is: “what does possum poop look like? Many people are afraid to confuse the feces of these mammals with the poop of pets. I suggest looking at possum poop pictures to see the characteristic differences and features.

    To identify distinctive features of possum poops, note the consistency of the feces. It is completely uniform, without any small broken pieces, as is often the case with dogs. Such poops should have no seeds. If you find the seeds of some plants in them, it is not possum feces.

    possum droppings

    Poops have a diameter of about 1-1.5 inches. The color may vary from dark brown to dark gray with possible light splashes. A characteristic feature of possum poop feces is a very unpleasant smell. It smells terrible! The smell of the poop of a dog or cat is less pronounced.

    It is due to pheromones’ secretions, thanks to which omnivorous mammals mark the territory and scare away potential enemies. You will smell ammonia and rotting poop, as possums often poop and pee at the same time.

    How to clean possum feces

    Are you sure you have found possum poop in the house, attic, garden, or garage? In this case, you need to remove the feces immediately so that pets and children do not get to them.

    reusable-gloves

    Step 1: Take care of the protective equipment

    Do not touch poop with bare hands or breathe in the smell. Use thick rubber gloves and a respirator with transparent glasses to protect your eyes. It will eliminate the risk of infections and bacteria that may be present in the poo.

    Step 2: Inspect the feces carefully

    Take a close look at them with a respirator and glasses. You may notice small larvae. It is a bad sign. Be careful.

    Step 3: Place the poop in a bag

    Remove the found feces in several dense bags. Use a special cleaning kit if you have one. Do not try to wrap the poop in one layer of the bag. Cellophane may break during transportation and removal to the trash.

    Step 4: Throw it in the container

    In sturdy or sealed bags, throw the feces into the trash and close the container. Make sure the lid of the container is tightly closed and no other animals can get inside.

    Step 5: Disinfect the spot

    It is not the end of the cleaning process. The place where the feces were should be treated with a disinfector. It can be an alcoholic antiseptic with high alcohol content, bleach, chlorine concentrate, or any remedy against bacteria and infections. Remember to carefully throw away the gloves and respirator after cleaning, as bacteria may be inside the filter.

    There are several indications that possums have appeared in your home or garden:

    • You hear scratchy sounds in the attic or basement that change their location;
    • The facade of a house from below can be bitten, as possums often tear down the finish of a house in some places, damage the cornices and siding;
    • You may smell ammonia (possum urine has a pungent smell);
    • Pet food disappears (possums can feast on the dog or cat food).

    Deer Poop: Identification & Removal Guide

    Deer can be a serious problem for those whose areas are located near the forest. If you grow vegetables and fruits, it is likely they will attract animals. In addition to massive damage to your crops, they can cause even greater harm to your health. It is known that deer defecate 10-15 times a day.

    If an animal is sick, a deer poop is a huge danger to pets, farm animals, and humans. If you want to know how to recognize their feces, why they are dangerous, and how to remove them, you’ll find all the info you need below.

    Deer Droppings Removal Guide

    deer poop on brown woden log

    Deer are very gluttonous creatures and are considered the record holders for the amount of damage to agriculture. However, not only do they pose a danger but also their waste.

    Deer scat identification

    As I said, on average, deer poop 10-15 times a day, but in spring and summer, when plants are incredibly juicy, this figure can increase up to 20-30 times daily. Imagine what a mess they will make your garden! In deer poop pictures, you can see some pretty impressive piles of poop.

    Females have up to 60 pellets in one session, while males can have up to 80. Moreover, they defecate right in the same places where they eat, that is, in your backyard.

    deer poop

    So, what does deer poop look like? Feces usually have a rounded granule shape; occasionally, they are slightly elongated. Since deer are herbivores, their wastes decompose rather quickly. On the first day, they are smooth, shiny, and have a dark color. Then they dry up, brighten, acquire a fibrous structure, and crack.

    Sometimes you can see pieces of undigested nuts, corn, oats, and even small twigs in them. They resemble the feces of goats, hares, squirrels, and rabbits in their shape, but they are somewhat larger in size (up to 1 inch). Take a good look at the photos of deer feces to understand what you are dealing with.

    Deer scat threat

    deer droppings

    Since wild animal feces can contain disease-causing parasites, it is not recommended for humans to contact them directly. Is deer poop dangerous? My definite answer is yes!

    Among the dangerous diseases that are transmitted through scat, it is worth highlighting Chronic wasting disease (or abbreviated CWD) caused by prions. It affects deer brains, causing an animal to lose weight, coordination, move poorly, and subsequently die.

    At the moment, it’s unknown whether humans can become infected, but pets and farm animals are at risk. But different types of Escherichia coli can easily infect people. Bacteria can enter our body through contact with feces and urine or even while swimming in a muddy pond near which deer live.

    Dicrocoelium dendriticum infections affect the biliary tract, liver and can even cause cirrhosis in ungulates and mammals, including humans. Eggs of these parasites can be clearly seen on deer droppings pictures. Another disease, Fasciolosis, has a similar effect on animals. In humans, it causes urticaria, ascites, anemia, jaundice, and hepatitis.

    Cleaning deer turds

    rubber gloves

    Many gardeners use feces as fertilizer. I highly discourage doing this since you cannot know for sure that a deer who has visited you isn’t sick in any way. It is best to remove them from your flower beds to avoid spreading diseases.

    Safety measures

    As with any wild animal feces, extreme caution should be exercised when cleaning deer excrements. Before starting work, put on old clothing that will completely cover your arms and legs. It is also recommended to wear rubber boots and disposable gloves. Use a respirator and goggles as extra protection.

    Disposal

    Never remove deer feces with bare hands. Use an inverted bag or, better yet, a shovel. The easiest way to get rid of them is to seal them up and throw them in the trash. However, if you have the appropriate hardware, you can hot-compost it. The collected material should be processed for at least a week at a temperature not lower than 140°F.

    Upon completing work, be sure to wash your clothes in hot water with detergent, pack and discard disposable items hermetically, and treat your shovel and boots with boiling water. If poop comes into contact with edible plants, unfortunately, you will have to destroy them.

    Infestation

    The appearance of deer near your site is hard to miss. Even if you do not see animals themselves, you will definitely find traces of their appearance with ease. Deer damage includes gnawed trees, broken branches, eaten fruits, vegetables, and young plant shoots.

    Besides, these animals tend to scratch on tree trunks so that pieces of their fur can catch on a bark. On the ground, you will see a huge variety of hoof prints and, of course, piles of poop.

    Deer are especially active in spring and summer when they gain access to food after a hungry winter. It is then that the amount of destruction and the volume of feces increase (it is noticeable in some deer poop images).

    FAQs About Deer Poop in Yard

    deer poop on the snow

    This section contains answers to common questions about deer feces.

    Why do dogs roll in deer poop?

    It may be due to their instinctive desire to mask their own scent since wolves, their ancestors, did it while hunting. Or they want to absorb extraneous odors to “tell” the relatives where they have been.

    What happens if a dog eats deer poop?

    It’s simple: if a dog does it, it will get sick with diseases that a deer had (if any). At the same time, it is highly likely that a pet’s owner will also get sick after contact with it.

    Is deer poop a good fertilizer?

    In theory, yes. Deer are herbivores, so their feces contain a lot of nutrients and fermented plant debris. However, if a deer was sick, burying its poop in the ground will spread the disease throughout your area.

    Handle Deer Excrements With Care

    Although it is not always possible for wild animals to be infected with dangerous diseases, it is best to take all possible safety measures. Some infections are easy to pick up when gardening on contaminated soil.

    At-risk are animals, kids, the elderly, and people with weak immunity. Therefore, I recommend removing feces from your site timely and doing everything possible to deter deer from your site.

    Have you ever encountered deer problems? Did they leave poop in your yard? Please, tell my readers and me how you managed to scare these animals away.

    What Do Ants Eat: Ant Diet

    What do ants eat and drink? The super-simple answer is everything. Drop an ice-cream cone in the middle of the park or leave a slice of pastrami on your porch and you’ll see ants gathering around it within an hour or so.

    ants

    Don’t the tiny buggers care about their diet? Won’t they feel sick from the continuous mish-mash of flavors? And why do some ants eat hardwood while others prefer a sugar plum?

    The answer to these and other questions lies in the fascinating biology of an ant.

    All Mandibles, No Bite

    With more than 12 species of ants on the globe, I am quite confident that everyone has seen an ant in their life, so I won’t waste anyone’s time describing what they look like.

    You’ve seen they have a large head with a massive (relatively to their size) mouth, which is called a mandible. That’s probably how they chomp their meals, right?

    Nope. Your typical run in the mill ant will use its mandibles to carry stuff around or pick a fight. And to be honest with you, with that strong jawline, who wouldn’t?

    However, as intimidating as it may seem, an ant’s “mouth” is not well equipped for doing what a mouth does – biting and chewing. Most species of ants can’t consume hard food. They use their mandibles to break down the stuff they steal from others and then moisturize the bites with saliva until the snack is liquified enough to swallow. Not a simple process, I must tell you.

    That’s why a lot of ants are attracted to sugar and sweets – sucking a candy is just that much better of an experience than crushing breadcrumbs. That being said, an ant won’t hesitate to eat a dead bug, a leaf, or even it’s fallen comrade for dessert.

    What Do Ants Like to Eat Then?

    Ant

    Given the plethora of ant species and the differences in their dietary preferences, most scientists have decided to divide the tiny soldiers into two primary categories. So, what do ants like to eat?

    • Sugar lovers: Most ants fall into this category. Why? Think about it. Sugar is plentiful. Locating a source of nutrition is easy;
    • Protein addicts: These bad boys are hunters as protein isn’t as easy to come across. It has to come either from a human-processed food or from another bug.

    Most sources of manmade food contain sugar. Everything from bread to cereal is sweetened. Add the fact that aphids produce honeydew naturally and that there are sweet fruits all over the world, and you’ll get why, despite the ever-growing population, ants will probably never starve to death.

    More on the matter, ants actually herd aphids to ensure a continuous stream of their sweet juice in the colony. Talk about an ant diet itch only honeydew can scratch!

    As for the proteins, most ants just gather random dead bugs from all over and eat them. This is, by the way, one of the most balanced forces of nature I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing in my years of studies. Though the balanced wheel of life and death is slightly tinted by the fact that sometimes an ant’s food source is another ant. Not cool, bros!

    How Do Ants Find Their Food?

    Ant

    Ants love sugar, one of the few foods that do not have a scent or even a particularly appetizing shape all by itself. So what makes an ant tick and how do they spot sugar crystals?

    The answer is composed of two parts. One is more scientific and the other is, well, somewhat scientific in nature.

    For starters, most insects have the ability to sense various chemical substances in the environment. It is called Chemosense. This is how those pesky mosquitoes tend to find your sweet spot – they follow the sweat.

    Ants can do the same but with a much sweeter target.

    The other reason why ants can quickly find sugar is dumb luck. There are billions upon billions of ants out there, most of which are on a 24/7 quest to get food for the colony. Their numbers increase the odds of finding a treat. And the seemingly organized food extraction mission you see in cartoons or on Natural Geographic is always a result of one lucky worker finding something worthwhile and pointing his brethren in the right direction.

    But What About the Wood?

    Ants are not termites. They do not consume wood. At least not in the traditional sense.

    Though this doesn’t stop them from nesting on a wooden floor or something. Moreover, certain species, such as the carpenter ants, are a terrific roommate for this reason. The longer they share your space, the bigger the odds the roof is going to collapse on you from their mining expedition to extend the colony even further.

    If you are looking to prevent carpenter ants from entering your home, follow these simple steps:

    • No standing water. Make sure that the sinks are always dry, for an ant can always find food, but locating water is much more problematic for them;
    • Don’t let loose tree branches connect to your house. Cut them if need be or they will become a bridge between your home and an invading army;
    • Seal all the cracks in the exterior of your home;
    • Don’t store your firewood or any additional wooden materials you don’t use often close to the house.

    Common Misconceptions About an Ant’s Diet

    Ants

    Most ants you see carrying leaves do not intend to either eat nor share them with others. Instead, ants, such as the leafcutter, turn the greens into their personal fields of harvest.

    The ants will cut the leaves into small pieces, chew these pieces to a pulp, and then store the result with their feces. This ant-made farm will later produce a fungus the colony will actually eat.

    As I’ve mentioned above, carpenter ants don’t eat wood. They throw away the leftovers forming small piles of dust around their nets. Little do they know that these dusty piles are a telltale sign warning the homeowner about the unwanted guests.

    Thanks for the heads-up, carpenter ants… I guess.

    Ant Diet and Baiting

    Most pest exterminators take great advantage of an ant’s diet. The manufacturers produce long-lasting poisons that attract the little camps.

    These poison granules or gel resemble sugary ant food, so any happy worker ant coming across the bait will target it for HQ delivery. Perhaps the little guy will even be rewarded.

    Once the poison is in the colony’s nest, more ants will start both eating and spreading the toxin thus effectively eliminating their primary target – the queen, as well as every other ant in the colony.

    Controlled annihilation. How is the US army force not finding these traps yet?

    Ants

    What is an Ant’s Favorite Food?

    Ants are not picky eaters. They do not have a favorite food, though they prefer proteins and food rich in sugar.

    Do Ants Eat Other Ants?

    What are the things that eat ants, you ask? Other ants! Yes, those tiny hunters can eat their brethren, but they typically search for food sources that don’t fight back with giant mandibles.

    Do Ants Eat Leaves?

    Ants gather harvest leaves, but most of those are used in the construction of a colony, though a typical insect wouldn’t mind grabbing a bite. Ants also use the leaves they collect to feed their domesticated aphids, the tiny insects a colony cultivates to produce honeydew.

    Do Ants Eat Fruit?

    Yes, fruits are just the way ants like their food – soft and sweet.

    How to Keep Your Home Safe From Things Ants Like to Eat?

    Alas, there is no feasible way of keeping your home safe from ant snacks. You’ll simply starve to death with no potential “ant food” in the vicinity. That being said, a daily dose of cleaning and a couple of ant baits scattered outside the house should do the trick just fine.
    Remember to always:

    • Seal your food;
    • Hide the leftovers;
    • Vacuum clean regularly;
    • Take care of the garden;
    • Keep moist areas (kitchen, bathroom) dry.

    This way, you won’t be feeding any uninvited guests any time soon.

    Difference Between Mice and Rats: Tips and Guide for You

    Despite the fact that almost all people think that mice and rats have only one noticeable difference — their appearance, the size in particular — there are a lot of other very important distinctions. Why do you need to know the differences between these two rodents?

    The answer is simple — both rats and mice are one of the most common rodents in modern houses. Moreover, they are known for their quick ability to adapt to the human environment. Hence, by understanding the difference between these pests, you can implement more effective rodent control effects.

    Rat Versus Mouse: a Full Guide

    Imagine the situation that you are cooking in the kitchen, listening to music, being completely relaxed and immersed in your thoughts. And suddenly, a rodent runs across the floor. Can you distinguish a mouse from a rat in this state and select the right anti rodents remedy?

    In fact, for the vast majority of people, it is very easy to determine whether it is a rat or a mouse if they have a sufficient amount of time. But what should you do in such a situation? Below, I have collected the most noticeable differences between these two rodents, so you can quickly distinguish a rat from a mouse.

    What Is the Difference Between Mice and Rats?

    After reading this section, you will be able to distinguish a mature rat from a mouse. Moreover, you will also determine whether you have seen a baby rat or mouse.

    rat and mouse appearance

    Mouse vs Rat Droppings

    One of the easiest ways to determine whether you have a rodent infestation at home is by droppings. You need to understand that there are a lot of different types of mice and rats, and not all of them can live in your house.

    For example, there are more than 70 various species of mice and rats that live in North America, but only three of them can break into your house: roof rat, Norway rat, and a common house mouse. If you identify the rodent type correctly, then you can kill them very fast and take action to reduce the risk of infection in the future.

    The droppings can say a lot about the type of rodents you have. They vary by size and shape. It is a frequent mistake when people confuse rat droppings with that of a mouse, and mice with roach. In short:

    • The droppings of a roof rat have the shape of spindles and dark brown color;
    • You can be sure that you have a Norway rat if you found the droppings that look like the capsules (they are long and thin);
    • Finally, the rod shape of the droppings are evidence of the mice infestation. This rodent has the smallest droppings as compared to the species described above. The average length is about 3-8mm.

    Rat vs Mouse Size

    Even if you have never faced the rodent infestation at home, you most probably heard that mice are much smaller than rats. For example, the common mature home mouse has an average length of two to four inches. At the same time, the mature rat is about seven to nine inches. The difference is more than twice!

    But how to distinguish a baby rat from a mouse? It may be tricky to do since the sizes of an adult mouse and a baby rat can be the same. In such a situation, I recommend you to compare these two rodents in terms of other characteristics.

    For example, it can be a body length, a tail, a color, and so on. Another recommendation is to take some time and examine various images after you will finish this article. It is essential to find the photos taken in real life. Maybe, at first, it will be difficult for you to distinguish a mature mouse from a baby rat, but do not give up! A little time and practice, and you will succeed.

    Mouse Tail vs Rat Tail

    As I have mentioned above, the rats are much bigger in size. In centimeters, a common house mouse measures from twelve to twenty centimeters and weighs from twelve to thirty grams. These dimensions include a tail. At the same time, the average length of a mature rat is about forty centimeters.

    Consequently, the mice’s tails are much shorter than those of rats. Moreover, they are thinner and have some hair while rats’ tails are commonly scaly and hairless.

    Mice Body Length vs Rat Body Lengths

    Now, let’s observe rodents’ bodies. As I have mentioned above, there are three main rodent types that can penetrate your house: Norway rat, roof rat, and a house mouse. It is very easy to distinguish them considering the body only. First of all, a rat compared to mouse is significantly bigger.

    Below, I point out the more detailed characteristics that will help you to differentiate a rat vs mice:

    • Roof rats: they have a fairly light and slender body, which allows these rodents to penetrate even the narrowest gaps. Their fur color is gray, but with a touch of black. The coat is very smooth, and the tail is dark;
    • House mouse: its body size will be correspondingly two times smaller than that of a rat. A mouse features a tiny head and a rather pointed muzzle. Moreover, its body color is likewise different: it is light brown with a gray tint and a dark tail;
    • Norway rat: it has the heaviest and thickest body among all the rodents on the list, as well as a blunt muzzle. Its body color is brown, with a black tint (sometimes it is difficult to distinguish this dark brown shade from black one, especially in the dark). The tails of Norway rats are dark above and pale on the tips.

    Mice Ears vs Rat Ears

    When it comes to ears, rats have bigger ears than mice, though not in respect to their body size. I mean, if you see a rodent with quite noticeable ears, then, most probably, it is a house mouse. Here is a more detail overview of the home rodent ears:

    • Roof rat: large and hairless ears;
    • Norway rat: small and short ears with dark hair;
    • House mouse: short and rounded ears with some bunches of light brown hair.

    Mice Behavior vs Rat Behavior

    The last thing I want to tell you about rats and mice is their behavior. From my experience with these pests, it turned out that it is easy to determine whether you are dealing with a rat or a mouse by the way they behave. Also, the places where you noticed these rodents do matter. I used to think that rats are cautious rodents, while mice are curious ones (that is why you can notice a mouse in the kitchen in the afternoon more often than a rat).

    Rats are very careful pests. They do not like new things and try to avoid them. Commonly, rats are making a path that they are often using to get food. Therefore, the traps are not always an effective way to fight against rats. For them, it is a new thing on the path that rats are trying to avoid.

    On the other hand, mice are more curious and like to investigate something new. Consequently, traps are an effective way to kill them. You should find the path a mouse uses to get food and place the trap there. If you did not catch the animal in the first several days, then it is the wrong place, and you should move it.

    Identify Whether You Have Rats or Mice in House

    So, now you know some physical characteristics that distinguish rats from mice. Briefly, there are three types of rodents you can meet in your home: Norway rat, roof rat, and mouse rat. In short, they vary by body size, ears shape, tail length, and even the droppings they leave.

    To summarize, here is a detailed overview for your convenience. I hope that you will find this summary useful and will learn how to distinguish a rat from a mouse based on the following features.

    • Norway rats: they are cautious animals; therefore, traps are not an effective way to get rid of them. Norway rats have a thick, heavy body with dark brown hair. The tail is black on top but it is pale in the end. The ears are quite big in size. The mature Norway rat weighs about 300 grams and produces long and thin droppings that look like capsules;
    • Roof rat weighs less than a Norway species — about 200 grams. It has a slender dark gray body with a long dark tail. The ears of roof rat are large and hairless;
    • House mouse is a small rodent, only several centimeters in length. It is a very curious animal with a light brown body and dark tail. It has very small droppings that are easy to confuse with the roaches ones.

    Common Mouse & Rat Treatments

    There are a lot of treatments that can help you to keep mice and rats under control. To make you familiarized with this variety, I want to describe them briefly. There are treatments that are harmless to your family members (including children) and pets.

    Among them are non-toxic traps and some poisons. Remember, that in case you have a rat infestation, you should not use the traps, they are effective only against mice. The poison can be in a liquid or in solid state.

    In addition, you can buy sprays. Based on my tests with these products, I do not recommend you to use sprays. The reason is they are effective only if you spray this remedy directly on a rodent, otherwise, it is not efficient. Finally, although there are a lot of different remedies that you can use at home, before purchasing them I highly recommend you to evaluate the level of infestation.

    If you have a lot of rodents, then the wise decision will be to call the rodent control management company.

    FAQ Section

    Here, I collected the most frequently asked questions from different forums and rodents control sites. As you know a lot about the rodents by this point, my answers will be short yet precise.

    Can You Have Mice and Rats at the Same Time?

    Yes, I know the cases when there are mice and rats the same time and in one building. Norway rats usually live on the lower floors, while roof rats dwell on the upper floors. House mice can live wherever.

    How Big Do Mice Get?

    As I have already described above, mice are much smaller than rats. Usually, a mature mouse measures from twelve to twenty centimeters, and it is with a tail! The weight of the animal is from twelve to thirty grams.

    Who Causes More Damage Mouse or Rat?

    It is hard to answer this question in several words. First of all, both rats and mice spread diseases and infections. Secondly, they can be a cause of great damage to your house as well as eat the food, both of humans and pets. Therefore, if you notice any of these rodents at home, you should call rodent control companies or purchase a poison immediately.

    Can Rodents Cause Health Problems?

    Yes! All rodents can pose a serious risk to your health as they spread various diseases that can be transferred to people. Among them are Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, Leptospirosis, Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis, and so on.

    Rats and Mice: Summarizing the Differences

    How to Get Rid of Mice in Attic: Detailed Identification & Removal Guide

    Hi! Today, I want to discuss mice, how to identify them, and, most importantly, how to get rid of mice in attic. During my professional life, I met a lot of people with terrible attics: there were so many mice, so they were forced to spend several thousand dollars to keep mice out of attic. Mice is a really serious problem.

    For example, do you know that one female mouse can reproduce from five to twelve babies every three-four weeks? In addition, they carry bacterias, eat food, and damage your building structures. Hence, if you are seeking the best way to get rid of mice in the attic or just want to prevent their appearance, this article is for you. Keep reading!

    Removing Mice From Attic: Guide

    In this section, I provide you with the guide on how to get mice out of the attic, but before I want to discuss how they actually gain the entrance to your attic, and why the attics are always considered as the most vulnerable place for rodent infestation.

    Mice lead an active lifestyle, which is why they learned not only to live in drain pipes and refit from one branch to another but also to adapt to various conditions. Therefore, they can easily climb to the roof and penetrate there within seconds. There are some of the reasons why mice prefer to live in the attic:

    • Food: rodents used to live near the food sources, and the roof is the most obvious place where you keep flour, fruits, vegetables, cereals;
    • Temperature: mice prefer cold weather and hate warm days. As such, as the summer comes, the risk of rodent infestation significantly rises;
    • Many places to hide: mice like to find the small dark places where they can hide. If you have plenty of boxes and shelves, then, you’ve made your attic the ideal place for mice living;
    • No humans and pets: as it used to be, the roof is not a place where you or your pets want to be. It is not a secret that mice like places with no people and pets.

    The last reason why the attic is the most vulnerable place for the rodent infestation in the house is full insulation for mice in the attic. They will quickly find the possible ways to get out of there if something happens and make the tunnels.

    No one can interfere with them, as well as find these tunnels. Now, you know why you need to pay special attention to the attic, it is time to find out what to do if you find mice in the roof. Follow this step by step guide!

    small mouse in search of food

    Step 1: Identify Mice and the Entry Points

    The first step is to identify whether you have mice in the attic. The first and the most obvious way to do it is to climb the roof and stand for a couple of minutes without moving and making no sounds. But that may not help. Did you hear the expression: “Be quiet as a mouse”? They came up with this for a good reason.

    The mice are really very quiet rodents. First of all, this is due to their tiny size. And the second reason is that they like isolation. Therefore, as soon as they hear some extraneous sounds, they literally freeze and try not to make any noise. Below, I left the list of other possible ways to make sure that you have mice in attic:

    • Droppings: all rodents have different droppings in size and shape, therefore, it is very easy to identify the type of rodent using only droppings. In the case of mice, you should look a trail of black pellets, as the rice grains;
    • Find the urine areas;
    • Look for the mice nests. Commonly, they used to create the nests from the fibrous material. For example, shredded paper;
    • Find the mice burrows (one-inch holes in diameter);
    • Mouse tunnels;
    • Different chewed items.

    mouse in the corner

    In addition to finding the signs of mice in attic, you also need to identify their entry points. It is important to prevent future mice penetrations. What you should look for are the various gaps and holes. I recommend you to check the following places at first:

    • Air-conditioner connections;
    • The areas near water pipes;
    • Doors and windows;
    • Foundations gaps.

    Step 2: Seal the Entry Points to Get Rid of Mice

    Before we start to use various attic mice control remedies, it is important to seal the entry points you’ve just found. Many people used to skip this step, but, believe me, it is a really important action. First of all, it may help to prevent mice’s appearance in the future. Secondly, other rodents can’t break into your house while you get rid of mice. Thirdly, it prevents from appearing, as I called, the “false sense of victory.”

    Let me explain what I mean. It is a common situation when people think that they are getting mice out of attic when they just go through these holes outside and leave one gift for you — their little children. People mistakenly think that all mice are killed and stop to apply rodent control remedies. The truth is that mice have just left your house, but their children continue to secretly develop.

    So, what you need to do after you discover all the possible entry points is to seal all these openings and gaps. For small holes, I recommend you to use steel and caulk wool scouring pads. In the case of large openings, you should apply sheet metal, concrete mortar, or heavy-gauge hardware.

    Make sure that there are no gaps between doors/windows and the walls. If you notice some tiny holes, you can use water-resistant strips. I strongly do not recommend you to close these gaps by “chewing materials”, like wood or plastic. Mice can chew them within minutes.

    holes in attic

    Step 3: Trim Trees and Bushes to Keep Mice Out of Attic

    As I mentioned above, mice can adapt to live in different conditions very fast. One such example is their ability to climb the limbs. So, even if you close all the gaps between your house and outdoors, make sure that all windows and doors fit tightly, there are still a lot of chances, mice can penetrate in the attic.

    One of them is by climbing trees and brushes. Therefore, it is important to trim all of them to cut the way for mice to get to the roof.

    One tip, even if you do not have the trees that fit snugly against the walls of your home, anyway, I highly recommend trimming them. Mice are the well-known athletics of the animal world that can jump up about a foot in height. In addition, such precautions will help prevent the appearance of many bugs that can crawl through the branches right into your home.

    Step 4: Install Mice Traps in the Attic and the House Interior

    So, when you identify mice in attic, their entry points, close all the openings, and trim the trees, it is time to start catching mice in attic. Now, I will tell you about various types of mice traps you can safely use in your house. Although there are dozens of such traps, I only dwell on the most spread ones: snap, glue boards, electric, and live.

    Snap traps are the most popular way to catch mice. Firstly, it is relatively cheap; the trap is easy to buy at any pet store. Secondly, it is completely safe for people and pets; snap traps do not contain any toxic substances. Thirdly, it is made of wood, a material that attracts mice.

    However, despite all the advantages, the trap has many disadvantages. Among them is the fact that the trap has to be installed with your hands.

    Be careful as it can damage your fingers. Also, for the trap to work, it is necessary that the mouse pulls the trigger. Keep in mind that the trap does not isolate the mouse in any way; the only way to remove it is to use your hands. By the way, do not forget that rodents are good carriers of various infections that are transmitted to humans, including hantavirus, so do not forget to use gloves.

    Glue boards are plastic rectangles with glue on the surface. Every time a mouse hits it, it sticks and cannot break out. I have to say right away, if you disdain mice, then skip this variant of traps. It is likely that the mouse will still be alive, but with a large number of bone fractures, so the most gracious option would be to kill it immediately.

    Related Post: Most Effective Mouse Traps Reviewed.

    Electric traps are the newest and the most innovative way to kill the rodents. It uses electricity to, firstly, shock the mice, and then instantly kill them. In my opinion, if you decided to kill mice, it is the most humane way to do it, as death comes immediately.

    The last trap example is live traps. They are used when people do not want to kill the mouse. There are many types of humane mice traps that can even catch up to 12 mice in time! The principle of action is very similar to snap traps: you just need to place bait to the trap, and when a mouse enters the box and presses the trigger, the doors will be closed automatically.

    Step 5: Check the Traps Daily for Removing Mice from Attic

    Despite the trap you set, it’s very important to take the habit of checking them daily. Firstly, this way you can kill more mice in a shorter period. Secondly, after their death, mice emit a very unpleasant odor, which can fill your entire house and make it uninhabitable for a while.

    The last recommendation about the traps is that you need to place them in several different locations. Use the mice signs you found during step one as the prompt. If there are a lot of places, then you can write the trap locations down not to miss one such place during the daily checking.

    Fruit Fly vs Gnat: How to Distinguish

    One of the main problems related to all insects is their small size. Due to this, people often tend to confuse them and choose mistaken controls. One of the brightest examples is fruit flies and gnats. How can you distinguish fruit fly vs gnat? Both insects are small, annoying, can fly, and may create a lot of inconvenience to you and other people.

    Let’s be honest, almost all people do not bother to distinguish flying insects and define their species. But it is very important to understand this aspect at least in order to purchase the right controls. Therefore, today, I want to teach you how to define whether you have fruit flies or gnats.

    What Is the Difference Between Gnats and Fruit Flies: a Complete Guide

    In this section, we will look closer at both fruit flies and gnats. What do they look like? Where did they come from? What is their lifestyle? What do they eat? It is only a part of the questions on which you will find answers here.

    Gnat Identification Chart

    black gnat sitting on leaf

    There are a lot of different gnat types that vary in color, shape, and even lifestyle. I will cover the most typical gnats that can appear at home.

    Color: ranges from grey to black. The most popular are brown gnats, but I know several people who told me: “I found red gnats in my house”. Of course, it is possible, but red gnats are a very rare type.

    Shape: like the vast majority of home insects, gnats with red eyes are almost tiny. They are less than 1/16 inch in length. Hence, if you notice tiny flies in kitchen, most probably, they are gnats.

    Lifecycle: before a gnat can be called a mature insect, it must go through three stages, starting with eggs, then they undergo larvae, and, finally, pupae. Interesting fact, when it is warm, these insects, usually, grow faster. The female gnats lay hundreds of eggs at the same time. The common life duration of these insects is about 2-3 weeks.

    Food: mature gnats are primarily fed on blood. They are one of the most known parasites that spread diseases and infections. But there are other gnat species that feed on crop pests and plants.

    Where you can meet them: gnats can live outdoors and indoors. They prefer to be near the water; therefore, there are so many gnats near a river in summer.

    Fruit Fly Identification Chart

    yellow fruit fly sitting on bolt

    Now, let’s see how the fruit flies look and what they eat. To make it easy to compare fungus gnats vs fruit flies, I decided to include the same characteristics as in the previous section: color, shape, lifecycle, food, and places where they live.

    Color: fruit flies have almost the same colors as gnats. Their color palette varies from tan to brown-black and brown-yellow. So, small black flying bugs in house not fruit flies!

    Shape: Fruit flies are almost twice as much as gnats. The mature insect is about 1/8 inch in length. It is almost the most important reason why some bugs that look like fruit flies tend to be confused by people. By the way, comparing drain flies vs fruit flies, it is important to say that the first species features a significantly bigger body size.

    Lifecycle: Fruit flies like gnats prefer warm temperatures. Therefore, they appear in the summer or early autumn. There are four stages of the fruit fly life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and mature insect. The fruit fly female can lay about 500 eggs at once. Compared to gnats, fruit flies live less: about one-two weeks.

    Food: Fruit flies like to eat fruits, vegetables, and other organic matter. They do not feed on humans or animals’ blood.

    Where you can meet them: near fruits and vegetables.

    Where Do Gnats Come From?

    small forest river in spring

    Gnats love wet and secluded places. Forests near the river are a great breeding ground. Adult females predominantly lay eggs in organic material, such as compost, dirt, or mulch. During their maturation, the larvae feed on various decomposing substances and fungi that they find in the soil.

    After two weeks of such feeding, gnats become full-fledged pests. However, they do not fly away from water and moisture. Those gnats that live at home are also looking for dark and secluded places.

    It is important to remember that gnats always fly into the light. That is why, make sure that your windows have special anti-mosquitos nets, especially if you live near the river or lake.

    What Do Fruit Flies Come From?

    We have already figured out where gnats come from. Now let’s look at fruit midges. Each of us faced a situation where you accidentally left a bitten fruit on a plate for the whole night, and you woke up in the morning and saw a huge amount of fruit flies. You looked at the windows and saw that they were closed. So, where had they come from?

    It turns out that there is no mysticism. Although until the 19th century it was believed that all insects could appear from the air. However, thanks to today’s capabilities, we know that fruit flies are finding fruits or vegetables and lay eggs on them. These eggs are invisible to human eyes.

    Once this vegetable or fruit begins to roam or rot, the midges become activated, grow rapidly, and begin to take over your kitchen. If we talk about street fruit flies, then they live mainly in gardens. By the way, it is much easier to get rid of home fruit flies than of street ones.

    FAQ Section

    To include only the most necessary and important information in this article, I browsed through dozens of insect forums and selected the four most popular questions. It is possible that some facts may resemble the ones mentioned above.

    Are Gnats and Fruit Flies the Same?

    No. The only similarity these two insects have is tiny body size. Although, if you take a closer look, you can notice that gnats are much smaller as compared to fruit flies. It is related to body color.

    Yes, they are both dark but the vast majority of fruit flies feature the brown color while gnats are grey or black. The biggest difference, in my opinion, lies in the food. Gnats are well-known parasites that feed on blood while fruit flies prefer to eat vegetables, fruits, and other organic matters.

    How to Prevent Fruit Flies and Gnats?

    It is much easier to get rid of fruit flies than gnats. Although they are completely different insects, there are four basic pieces of advice that can help you to prevent their appearance. First of all, never leave unfinished food on the table. Secondly, wash the dishes regularly.

    Thirdly, watch out for garbage and take it out regularly. Garbage such as fish or spoiled food is recommended to be taken out immediately. And finally, put anti-mosquito nets on the windows and do not forget to clean the home regularly.

    How to Get Rid of Gnats and Fruit Flies?

    Firstly, let’s dwell on how to get rid of fruit flies in your home. In most cases, you can do it by yourself without calling pest control companies:

    • Create a trap from cider vinegar;
    • Throw out all food from the table;
    • Put a fruit to the jar with a trap to attract fruit flies.

    Now, how to get rid of fungus gnats. You can do it by decreasing soil moisture in houseplants, placing traps, or using special gnat killer sprays.

    Do Gnats Lay Eggs?

    Yes. A female gnat can lay hundreds of eggs at once. Most often, they do it in moist soil, near the water, and in dark places. It takes about three days to pass the egg stage. Sometimes, gnats can lay eggs indoors. Therefore, do not be surprised if you find gnats or fruit flies in house.

    A Quick Guide on Crazy Ants: Everything You Need to Know to Fight Them

    These insects are smart, agile, well-organized, and determined to survive and thrive no matter what. By the time you spot one, there are likely to be millions more spread around your property, so you have to act fast to eliminate ant infestation and kick the trespassers out.

    What Are Crazy Ants?

    yellow-crazy-ant

    Rasberry crazy ants, named so after the exterminator who discovered the species in 2002, are referred to as “crazy” for their chaotic movements. Adult members are around 3mm long and can vary in color from tawny pests in Texas to black crazy ants in Florida. Compared to other types of ants populating the southeastern regions of the USA, crazy ants have much longer legs and horns, dense-haired bodies, and no stinger. An average crazy ant has a lifespan of 76-84 days.

    The relatively new species is famous for its peculiar frantic behavior, the ability to reproduce at a head-spinning rate, and its odd fondness of electrical devices. The latter characteristic has made these pests especially unwelcome, as the estimated electrical damage caused by their activities across the US amounts to $146 million annually.

    When an electric shock kills a crazy ant, its body releases a specific pheromone, signaling to the rest of their colony that one of theirs has been attacked. And so, they rush for help just to end up being electrocuted themselves. The more of them die, the more come to rescue. At some point, a short circuit of the wiring seems inevitable.

    Where Do Crazy Ants Live?

    tawny crazy ant

    One of the reasons why these pests are tenacious of life is their fantastic adaptability. These little fellows are capable of adjusting to almost any habitat. On warm and sunny days, they are perfectly happy to stroll around the yard rubbish, tree cavities, mulch, dead leaves, rocky walls, and potted plants. However, as soon as the weather changes, the ants move into houses and garages where they have enough food to survive the cold.

    Crazy Ant Treatment and Removal Strategies

    Even though they are killed without much effort, total elimination is not as easy as with other pests. This is mainly because of the enormous size of their super-colonies, their erratic movement patterns, and the fact that they can live and prosper both inside your house and outside of it.

    How to Track Down Crazy Ants?

    Before choosing a proper treatment method, you will need to assess how big and far gone the problem is. Start by locating their nesting sites in the house and the entry points through which they get inside. Use maple syrup, peanut butter, or sugared water to bait the ants and trick them into forming a visible line.

    When you know where they live and how they get inside, you can begin to act. Remember to seal all the entry points that you can find to prevent new ants from accessing your house and another re-infestation from the outbreak after you have eradicated the ones living inside.

    How to Kill Crazy Ants?

    rasberry crazy ant

    The most successful rasberry ants extermination options include the use of granular ant baits, ant killer powders, gel traps, and insecticide sprays.

    Granular ant baits can be used indoors and outdoors and are best applied in late winter or early spring when the ants are active, but their number is yet low, and their usual food is scarce.

    Ant sprays can be used inside your house to kill the ants that you spot. Alternatively, sprays can be applied on the outside walls of the house and on the ground to stop the pests from getting inside. These spays do not eradicate the nest; they are toxic and only effective short-term.

    Ant gel traps that combine a slow-acting poison with some enticing food bait are perfect for indoors and outdoors. They are harmless for kids and pets and can eliminate the entire crazy ant problem eventually as these little pests gladly take the gel to the nest with them, poisoning the others.

    The diatomaceous earth powder is a 100% natural treatment against crazy ants living indoors. It is eco-friendly and safe for children and house pets. Spread it by hand where you have seen the pests, or use it as a barrier at possible entry points. You can also try it outdoors, but do not forget to re-apply the powder, especially after it has rained hard.

    Do Crazy Ants Bite?

    These ants do not have a stinger, but they can bite in self-defense. Their bites can cause a little pain as there is formic acid being injected, but the sensation quickly disappears.

    How to Get Rid of Crazy Ants Naturally?

    • Do not leave any food and water sources in plain sight;
    • Try to locate and close off any entries to the house they may use;
    • Clear the yard of any debris that may shelter the ants;
    • Use a water-vinegar solution as a deterrent. Apply it on the floor, widow-sills, doorways, etc. The ants hate the smell of vinegar.

    How to Prevent Crazy Ants?

    Start by adopting a more meticulous housekeeping routine: clean the cooking surfaces with a water-vinegar mix, cleanse the dishes immediately after you have finished dining, swipe the floor a few times a day.

    Also, do not let garbage pile up in the yard. Remove any rotting dead leaves and fallen branches that the ants can use to build a house for themselves.

    How to Get Rid of Crazy Ants in My Car?

    Crazy ants in the car! Can it get any crazier? Clean the car from the inside and remove any food, then vacuum the surfaces to make sure there are no crumbs left for the ants to snack on.

    Treat the tires with a home-made deterrent or a commercial pesticide. Try not to park your car where there is likely to be a crazy ant nest around. Use non-chemical ant traps inside the cabin.

    Are Mosquitoes Attracted to Light? And Other Secrets You Did Not Know

    Remember how you turned off the lights, went to bed, and started to fall asleep when this terrible ringing came in to ruin your night? Bloody mosquitoes! I bet, it’s exactly why you decided to look up how to repel mosquitoes from home.

    In this article, I want to help homeowners get rid of the insects. I will gladly share my vast expertise so that you sleep carefree without any ruined nights.

    What We Know About Mosquitoes

    To learn what attracts mosquitoes and how to get rid of them, let’s take a closer look at this species.

    The common stereotype suggests that mosquitoes are feeding off of our blood, and they are attracted to light. However, it’s not necessarily the truth.

    brown mosquito sitting on skin

    Why Mosquitoes Bite

    Not all the mosquitoes are the annoying biters that we hate. Only female mosquitoes bite: they suck your blood for the proteins to develop their mosquito eggs. And what about the food? Get ready for a surprise: mosquitoes have been eating plant nectars all this time!

    A+ in Navigation

    As scary as it may seem, mosquitoes use three ways to detect and bite you:

    1. First of all, they can see you. Their faceted eyes can capture an object that attracts their attention.
    2. Thermal. As we noted above, mosquitoes feel the heat coming from you and are sent to explore the area.
    3. They distinguish the carbon dioxide that we exhale, and it’s what attracts mosquitoes the most. So if you want to repel mosquitoes (or rather attract them somewhere far from your room), try to assemble one of the CO2 mosquito traps that can be found all over the Internet.

    What Attracts Mosquitoes

    group of people camping in forest at nighttime

    Imagine a group of 10 people who went camping in a swampy forest. Do you think all the members will be bitten by mosquitoes equally? Or maybe mosquitoes prefer certain people?

    Amazingly, recent studies found out 20% of people are more likely to become victims of the mosquitoes’ maternal instincts. Why is it so? Scientists suggest that the answer is an increased generation of carbon dioxide. It’s especially common for obese people, pregnant women, and athletes. Still, we don’t know for certain what makes some people tastier from the mosquito’s point.

    As you can see, science is only beginning to uncover the mysteries of weird behavior in some insects. However, we can expect some breakthroughs in the industry of insect repellers coming for us very soon!

    Skin Color & Blood Type: Is There Any Difference?

    Because people with O-type are universal donors, they might also seem more delicious for the bugs. At least, this is the only decent explanation, why O-type people are twice as often bitten by mosquitoes than A-type.

    But when it comes to skin tone, it seems that the obnoxious insects see no difference.

    Why Are Mosquitoes Attracted to Light?

    Mosquitoes aren’t avid light-lovers: instead, they rely on the heat of other animals, people, and household objects. But other bugs, indeed, rush towards the light whatever it takes. They perceive it as a sort of guidance. Some of them even see the infrared radiation and navigate by it.

    That’s why there are no bugs-free lightbulbs on the market: for now, science just can’t figure them out.

    How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes

    If you want to escape mosquitoes, you have two options. Either you want to repel these annoying buzzers away from your home, or you would like for them to leave you alone while you’re on a walk.

    In the House

    I recommend starting with your doors and windows.

    • Check that there is no gap between the threshold and the door: this is a direct invitation not only for mosquitoes but for mice as well.
    • Place a thin mesh on the windows.

    Then, use electronic repellers: they disorient mosquitoes, so they simply can’t find you in the room.

    On the Street

    On a promenade, on a camping trip, or simply hanging out on the backyard, you can still get bombarded with mosquitoes. Consider purchasing mosquito repellents that are suitable for the outside use. For instance:

    • Citronella bracelets; citronella is a natural scent that repels insects.
    • Dense-textured clothes; cover your arms and legs, it will be harder for mosquitoes to bite through the fabric.
    • Chemical protective solutions, including repelling sprays.

    Of course, there are other ways to protect your house against mosquitoes, such as ultrasonic repellers or zappers. Nevertheless, because these insects don’t react to UV lights and sound, their effectiveness is questionable.

    FAQ: Easy Tips in Fighting Mosquitoes

    Although mosquitoes aren’t particularly complicated creatures, you might have lots of questions about them. I am happy to provide you with the fullest answers coming from my vast experience and knowledge.

    Why are bugs attracted to light?

    There’s no short answer, only a bunch of theories. The one I prefer the most is that the artificial radiation interferes with their natural vision. In other words, this disrupts their navigation.

    Are mosquitoes attracted to ultraviolet light?

    This question resonates with some others: “Are mosquitoes attracted to led light?” or, for instance, “Are mosquitoes attracted to blue light?” Unfortunately no, they are not. It’s only movement, heat, and carbon dioxide that they detect.

    Are mosquitoes attracted to black or any particular color?

    I get asked this question quite often. “What colors are mosquitoes attracted to”, or another version of it: “Are mosquitoes attracted to light or dark clothing?” It is based on the assumption that mosquitoes can distinguish colors. However, this is not the case.

    You see, clothes and objects of different colors interact with light in their own ways: dark fabrics and surfaces absorb the heat and retain it for a long time, while lighter ones are more reflective. Are mosquitoes attracted to color? No, they are not. But they are attracted to warmer surfaces. Therefore, mosquitoes like you more in black.

    How do mosquitoes navigate at night?

    If they can’t see you, they still feel your warmth (thermal sensory) and smell the CO2 you exhale. Combining these two sensory organs is exactly how they navigate at night.

    Secrets You’ve Learnt: in Short

    co2 trap hanging on tree

    Although mosquitoes can sometimes ruin our lives, fighting them will not take you much time and effort. Now you know that mosquitoes are attracted to heat and carbon dioxide, so it won’t be difficult for you to trick them. With quality repellents and CO2 traps, you’ll be just fine.

    What other insects do you suffer from? What is the most annoying pest? Share your opinion down below, and I will consider your suggestions when preparing another pest control article.

    I hope my guide has helped you in the never-ending battle against mosquitoes. Thanks for reading!

    Essential Oils for Bed Bugs: a Comprehensive Guide

    Hi, I`m Nicholas Martin, the author of this blog. I’ve already told you everything you should know about bed bugs, so now it’s time to introduce you to perhaps the best natural bed bug repellent – essential oils.

    From this article, you will learn what essential oils are, how they work, and what are the best essential oils for bed bugs. Oils extracted from plants are an effective natural remedy against these nasty insects.

    However, you cannot apply them until you study all the usage rules and cautions. My article will help you to find answers to all questions.

    What Danger Do Bed Bugs Pose

    First of all, bed bugs are incredibly nasty, and it’s really hard to sleep knowing that your place is infested. Although it’s impossible to catch a disease via bed bug bites, they can hurt and itch a lot. The bites can also cause such health issues as rashes all over the body, allergic hives, blistering, and, rarely, an anaphylactic reaction.

    What Are Essential Oils

    You probably know about high toxicity of chemical insecticides and potential health effects, and it’s not a good idea to use them where you sleep. Fortunately, essential oils offer an alternative way to deal with infestations, using a natural method.

    Essential oils are extracted from plants. Manufacturers use flowers, stems, leaves, and bark of plants and trees. They put these materials through a distillation machine for pure oil extraction.

    ❗If you’re already facing an infestation, I highly recommend trying other powerful treatment methods like bed bug powders and sprays.

    Although essential oils are totally natural, you should use them carefully not to suffer from their possible side effects. All essential oils are highly concentrated, so you have to dilute most of them before using. You can use some of the oils as a bed bug repellent for skin, but only in small concentrations to avoid burns and other side effects.

    If you are not sure whether you have an allergy or not, apply a small portion of diluted oil onto your wrist. If you don’t notice irritations during the day, you don’t have an allergy. Always study possible side effects and cautions of each oil and never ingest them, even if they smell very tasty.

    The Use of Essential Oils for Bed Bug Prevention

    Essential oils are an effective natural bed bug repellent that can not only keep bed bugs away from you during the night, but also kill them when used directly. I recommend you spray them onto your luggage and clothes when you stay in a hotel, and you’re not sure whether your room is infested or not.

    Treat your stuff before putting it into the suitcase to ward off pests and avoid carrying them to your home. You can also treat your clothes and luggage before entering your home after each trip to make sure that you don’t bring insects inside.

    Best Essential Oils for Killing Bed Bugs

    Choosing the right essential oil, you should look not only for the best scent but also to give your preference to trusted brands that sell purely-blended oils. I always follow a simple rule and buy only those items that have scientific names of the main component on the bottle.

    For example, if the lavender oil that you look at includes Lavandula Angustifolia as the main component, the product is pure. To know what scent keeps bed bugs away the best, take a look at my favorite essential oils and choose one or several scents that you like the most.

    Lavender

    violet lavender field

    Lavender essential oil is made of lavender flowers that have many positive health effects. The most popular effect of using lavender oil for bed bugs is the feeling of peacefulness it brings. That’s why I recommend using this product if you have mild sleeping issues.

    You need around 30-40 drops of the oil per 30 ml of water to make an effective repellent that will be working the whole night long. You may also like a 30/10-drop proportion of lavender and tea tree oils per 30 ml of water. Both mixes cannot kill bed bugs but can let you sleep well for sure.

    Tea Tree

    Melaleuca oil, or tea tree oil, is an effective natural repellent that can be used both on your bedding and directly on the skin due to its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory abilities. Tea tree oil for bed bugs suffocates insects, keeping them away from you during the night. Mix 20 drops of the oil with distilled water and spray it all over your bed before going to sleep.

    The effect of this oil is very quick, so you don’t have to wait long before it works. You can also add the liquid to the washing machine to use it as a natural conditioner for your sheets. Does tea tree oil kill bed bugs? It can, but the required suffocating concentration can be bad for your skin.

    Lemongrass

    Lemongrass is an effective bed bug killer that doesn’t leave bugs a chance to survive if they touch it. The recommended concentration for spraying over your sheets is 10-20 drops per 30 ml of water. It’s also important to apply it at least 30 minutes before going to bed due to the high acidity of the oil.

    That’s also the reason not to put it on your skin. The best way to use this oil at home is to mix it with the washing liquid to make your bedding smell fresher and ensure a lasting repelling effect.

    Peppermint

    Peppermint extract is a very aggressive substance that can easily kill bed bugs if you spray it directly on them. You shouldn’t use more than 10 drops per 30 ml to avoid side effects. The combination of peppermint with lemongrass is also deadly to bed bugs as it causes a strong allergic reaction.

    Eucalyptus

    This harsh oil is deadly not only for adult insects but also for their shelled eggs. Keep it strictly away from your skin and dilute 10-20 drops in 30 ml of water for spraying onto your beddings. It’s also a good idea to add this liquid to the washing machine.

    How to Use Essential Oils for Bed Bugs Properly

    person holding spray bottle photo

    No matter what essential oil you want to use, you have to check out the effective proportion on the bottle. For example, it’s recommended to mix 20 drops of tea tree oil with 30 ml of distilled water (I have mentioned the recommended proportions above).

    You can use tap water too, but it may weaken the repelling effect as there are usually many chemicals in it. When the liquid is ready, spray it on your sheets, pillows, clothes, and the insides of your suitcase.

    If you want to kill bed bugs, you’d better prepare a more concentrated liquid and spray it at least several hours before going to bed. Otherwise, you may expose yourself to unwanted side effects and stronger smell. Spray the remedy directly onto bugs to kill them.

    FAQ

    Does Peppermint Work Against Bed Bugs?

    wild peppermint in forest

    Peppermint essential oil is a multi-purpose product that can repel many household pests, including ants, cockroaches, and bed bugs. Due to the high concentration of menthol, this type of oil can be used not only as an effective natural bed bug repellent, but also as a lethal weapon against them.

    Bed bugs hate peppermint scent and avoid going to areas sprayed with the properly diluted oil. The solution is effective until you can smell the scent. Peppermint oil for bed bugs can also kill the insects, but only if you spray it directly on them.

    How to Use Essential Oils for Bed Bugs?

    To use essential oils against bed bugs effectively, you must dilute them in a special carrier oil or water first. Then, make sure that the oil you chose it safe for pregnant women, or people with illnesses, if such people live in your house.

    Exercise cautions for each particular case. If everything is ok, spray the properly diluted product (use unique instructions for each oil) onto your sheets. Remember that the concentration for one-night protection, and for killing pests is always different.

    Does Vinegar Kill Bed Bugs?

    Vinegar is an acidic compound with a high concentration of acetic acid. White vinegar is strong enough to kill the insect’s nervous system. However, you have to spray it directly on bugs to achieve the effect. This remedy isn’t effective against severe infestations and cannot penetrate hard shells of bug eggs.

    Does Alcohol Kill Bed Bugs?

    Alcohol can dissolve insects from the outside and finish the job by damaging them from the inside. It’s also a cheap remedy available in every drug store. The disadvantages of this remedy are the same as of vinegar.

    Alcohol is effective only when you spray it directly, which is difficult, and it dries very fast, becoming ineffective against bugs that reach the treated location later. It’s impossible to kill more than 50% of pests with alcohol. Finally, it’s highly flammable in effective concentrations.

    Now, you have a comprehensive picture of essential oils, know how to purchase them, and how to repel bed bugs using them. You can choose the scent that you like the most and be sure that bed bugs won’t get interested in your body during the next journey.

    Although bed bugs aren’t known as infection carriers, their bites are rather painful and can sometimes lead to rashes or even an anaphylactic reaction. The best solution is to be ready for an unpleasant meeting in advance.

    ❗Once again, if you have a severe infestation and still want to handle it yourself, you should use more powerful remedies like professional bed bug sprays.

    How to Get Rid of Dead Mouse/Rat Smell: Detailed Identification & Removal Guide

    Mice and rats are obnoxious pests that can get into even the tiniest spaces. Of course, no one would like to meet these rodents at home. Fortunately (and unfortunately), they tend to stay away from people. Therefore, we might notice an unpleasant smell of decay that seems to come from nowhere when, in fact, it comes from a decomposing rodent. It’s not easy to locate the stinky carcass: mice and rats die far from our reach, too.

    By profession, I’ve dealt with mice and rats quite often. House owners ask me all the time: how to find a dead mouse and get rid of the rotting odor? To answer these questions, I have written a guideline. Keep reading to learn more about pest control!

    [wpsm_titlebox title=”How to Get Rid of Dead Mouse/Rat Smell” style=”main”]
    1. Find the source of the odor.
    2. In the first place, do not forget about preventing rats and mice. Otherwise, there is a chance that you’ll run into this situation again.
    3. Use odor removal bags, air purifiers, scented candles, coffee beans, and ozone generating machines to control odor.
    [/wpsm_titlebox]

    How Do I Know if There’s a Dead Rat?

    If you think that a pest could have found its end on your site, it means that you’ve noticed a suspicious odor that has never been present before. Inexperienced homeowners might confuse the dead rat smell in a wall with something else. But if you’ve come across a decaying rodent at least once, every time you notice the odor, you’ll know what’s the drill.

    Describing a Dead Mouse Smell

    In walls, under a table, in piping or ventilating systems, it doesn’t matter where a critter got stuck: soon enough, you’ll become aware of it. The main sign is, of course, the decomposing odor that includes sulfur dioxide, methane, and gases generated in the deteriorating tissues.

    ❗ PERSONAL OPINION: The best description that I can think of is that the rotting critter smells musty. It’s a nasty bouquet of decaying flesh and gas generated by the intestinal microbes. It could also remind you of spoiled vegetables you’ve forgotten about a very long time ago.

    woman smelling some bad smell and holding nose closed

    Other Signs

    Are you unsure whether rodents have infested your home and possibly went off inside? Check if there are any:

    • rat or mouse feces in the closet, on the shelves; they also love hiding in attics and basements!
    • torn paper bits and nests in darker, secluded places.

    When a house is indeed infested, your pets (if any) might act weirdly. For example, dogs tend to wake you up at night and bark at nothing. It might be because they’ve heard a nocturnal critter getting out for food.

    Dead Rat Smell in House: Where to Look

    Alright, you’ve identified the odor: it seems that a poor rodent has passed away somewhere around. But what if you detected a dead rat smell in vents or somewhere else?

    First of all, check all the hiding places that nocturnal rodents typically find attractive. For instance, rats and mice like to get inside of our cupboards, under the upholstery of the furniture, in cars, garages, etc.

    ❗ IMPORTANT: If you came across a little corpse somewhere in the open, consider yourself lucky. In other cases, critters get trapped in walls, under carpeted floors, in the ceilings.

    To detect the rotting pest, pay your attention to:

    • Where the stink comes from. A simple sniff-test might save you a lot of time and effort. If it gets stronger, it means you’re coming closer to the source.
    • Flies, bugs, maggots, etc. These insects are typically attracted to the decaying flesh. If there’s any place where they hang around, it might be a good hint.
    • Wet stains from bodily fluids. Until a carcass dries out completely, it oozes liquids that might stain your walls or ceilings.

    brown mouse hiding under corner of a building

    Hidden Dangers of a Dead Rat Odor

    Remember a simple thing: the stinking isn’t going to harm you. Although the decomposing flesh exudes ammonia and further toxic substances, an itty-bitty mouse or even a slightly bigger rat won’t poison anybody. Unless you get your face ridiculously close to a dead critter, the odor isn’t going to pose any danger.

    The True Harm from Dead Critters

    There are further factors of body decomposition that are much more harmful to people: viruses, bacteria, fungi, etc. Therefore, it’s strictly forbidden to touch the dead with your bare hands or work without protective clothes and a respiratory mask. If you act too carelessly, various pathogens might get you infected.

    Another nasty thing is fleas. They are carriers of many diseases. After their main food source went off, they will seek a new one, and they will be hungry. Although people are not their favorites, by the time the insect leaves you alone, you will already be bitten, and the infection will begin spreading over your body.

    Take Care & Stay Aware

    If you’ve got plans on dealing with the obnoxious smell, the best thing you can do is to scare the pests off your site completely. Prevent mice and rats using professional service: fortunately, a group of experienced specialists will treat your premises. With the long-lasting effects of such treatment, you won’t see any pests for long.

    If you intend to eliminate mice and rats yourself, remember that they follow the traces of urine left by other rodents. Where you’ve previously removed the dead carcass from, another one might appear. To prevent it from happening, close the gaps in the walls. The rodents can get through the dime-sized holes, so it might be quite a workload.

    ❗ HAZARD: When looking for indoor pest control tools, do not choose poison: it would only aggravate the situation.

    The rodents will eat toxic pellets, hide in inaccessible places around your house, and pass away outside of your reach. Instead, opt for humane traps. By cleaning them regularly, you’ll take care of the stink.

    How to Get Rid of Dead Rat Smell

    It is not always possible to apply preventive measures. If the odor has already appeared, it needs to be addressed right here, right now. I would like to share with you how to eliminate the dead rat smell.

    Finding the Source

    field mouse hiding in a jar

    How long will a dead rat smell? It depends on various factors: humidity level, temperature around the house, etc. Therefore, fourteen days while the rodent decays and dries out can stretch to a month, or even longer, if you’ve come across a particularly well-fed rat. In short, detecting and eliminating a dead rodent carcass is your safest bet.

    Let’s see what you should do once you’ve identified the source of the odor.

    1. Wear tight gloves, protection clothes, and an anti-dust great-filtration respirator. There shouldn’t be any direct contact with the critter.
    2. Spray it with some bleach solution, sanitizer, or other substances to kill bacteria. Leave the rodent for 15-20 minutes to properly soak in the mix.
    3. Carefully take the rodent and throw it in a sack. Tie the bag extra tight and dispose of it.
    4. Start processing the place where the rodent was located. Use quality chemical cleaning solutions. If a poor thing has met its end on a soft material (such as upholstery or a car seat), you can spray it with vinegar.

    However, it’s not always possible to identify the source of your problem. You can only do something about the nasty rotting. For that reason, I would like to cover how to get rid of dead rat smell naturally.

    Organic Methods

    In a fight against odor, there are a plethora of natural chemical-free methods as well. Here is the list of some efficient ways to deal with the smell.

    • Odor-removing bags. With their organic mineral filling, such as sodium aluminosilicate, they eliminate the stink. Hang such a bag in a room, and in a day or two, the stinking will be gone.
    • Air purifying gadgets will help you forget there was ever a problem while also emitting a pleasant natural fragrance.
    • Scented candles. Although they aren’t helping with purifying the air, they just make the situation more bearable.
    • Coffee beans. It won’t be particularly effective as it masks the stink instead of the complete elimination, but you can hold out for two weeks, changing between coffee and scented candles.
    • Ozone generation machine. If you have one at home, it will remove any odors by ozonizing the air.

    FAQ: What You Should Do if You Smell a Rat

    Although I’ve used all my experience and expertise to provide the necessary standpoints, I wouldn’t dare to call this article exhaustive. Certainly, uncovered points could remain. So I’ve compiled a short Q&A to provide you answers on the most burning questions: for example, how long does it take for dead rat smell to go away.

    What Does a Dead Mouse Smell Like?

    Let me say, the odor is disgusting. If you’ve felt it once, then you won’t confuse it with anything else. A mouse or rat that died recently emits a strong rotting odor, slightly reminiscent of methane and spoiled cabbage.

    There’s a Dead Mouse in Wall. How Long Does It Take to Start Smelling?

    If you think you’ve identified a dead rat smell in the wall, it means that the animal is dead for at least 3 days. Nevertheless, in a colder climate, it might be delayed: the heat speeds up the decaying processes, whereas cold slows them down.

    How Long Does a Dead Mouse Smell?

    Fortunately, the dead rodent smell does not last long: the critter isn’t big in size, so in two weeks, it will dry out and stop emitting the nauseating bouquet. But be careful: if a pest stuck somewhere wet, for example, near the piping, it’s going to stink much stronger: moist isn’t your ally as it boosts the decaying process.

    Is the Smell Harmful to People?

    Even if you breathe it all day long, you won’t get intoxicated, I promise. At best, it would only make you nauseatic. A dead mouse itself is very toxic, but the carcass is far enough from you and won’t cause any damage (until you touch it with bare hands, of course).

    How to Get Dead Mouse Smell out of Car?

    pair of yellow rubber gloves

    You should always remember that mice and rats spread diseases, so it’s necessary to approach them in full clothes protection supplemented with gloves and a respiratory mask. The guide for cleaning your car is as follows:

    1. Apply the bleach solution directly and let the corpse soak in it for 15 minutes to kill any infection.
    2. Stick it in a sack; close tightly to seal the odor.
    3. The place where you’ve discovered a source needs to be treated with cleaning products, later proceeding to the car interior.

    Choose high-performance items. Also, consider using professional cleaning services.

    Highlights: How to Eliminate Dead Rat Smell

    Indeed, it’s necessary to fight not with the consequences, but with the cause. To achieve the long-lasting effect, the elimination of unpleasant odors should always begin with preventive measures. Until you scare the rodents off your site, even solving the original problem doesn’t guarantee it won’t be back.

    How can you secure your actions? With professional help, including not only my article but the advice of the local pest control agencies as well, you’ll forget about the dead mouse odor. On the other hand, this problem is widespread enough to find all the necessary information and expertise online. With due diligence, you’ll be able to cope with the issue on your own.

    A Detailed Guide on Ants and Ways to Kill Them

    An ant on green leaf

    It is not appropriate to consider all ants as pests. There are 12 000 types of ants that we know, and only a few of them invade our homes and gardens. Common species that can infest our homes are:

    Ants are marvelous creatures, and we must admit it. They can carry the weight which is 50 times heavier than their entire body. They are hard-working creatures that do not stop.

    They dwell in a well-organized colony with specific roles for everyone. The social hierarchy of these insects looks rather advanced. However, they can easily destroy all your crops and occupy your house.

    You will see this ingredient in your favorite cakes, muffins, and bread. Also, this product can be used to clean stains, and even grime. Some people use baking soda to whiten their skin and teeth. Sometimes it is used as an alternative to pesticides.

    Warning! Don’t make the mistake, baking soda and baking powder are not the same. This is not ant killer baking soda. The powder is a mix of cornstarch, and acid mineral latter.

    Will Baking Soda Kill Ants?

    This question still troubles the minds of scientists. Many of you have heard that the mix of soda and sugar may kill these nasty intruders. Moreover, we all have friends, relatives, or neighbors who have tried powdered sugar and baking soda to kill ants.

    They all are telling that these two ingredients explode in the stomach of ants killing them immediately from inside.

    For now, it looks like one of the baking soda ants myths. Scientists have never witnessed something like this. This theory has never been proved. However, you may always follow the ants and record the process on your own. What we know, that baking soda can dry up the body of the insect.

    How Does Baking Soda Kill Ants?

    Baking soda acts like diatomaceous earth by drying ants from inside. It absorbs the water from exoskeletons of these creatures until nothing is left. Many ants have already learned to avoid this product. This is why people mix baking soda with other ingredients that attract insects, which have a great smell.

    Does Sugar Kill Ants?

    ants and sugar

    No, sugar does not kill ants or, otherwise, there wouldn’t be any problem with the insects. On the contrary, sugar attracts ants with its odor. Ants can smell it from afar.

    This is why I recommend you to clean your house carefully, paying attention to even the smallest stains on the floor. The preventive measures are better than having to get rid of ants in your kitchen.

    How Long Does Baking Soda Take to Kill Ants?

    Baking soda kills ants in several hours. This is enough for ants workers to bring the product to their colony and share the deadly ingredient with others. You may notice the effect the next day. So, if you are making a homemade ant trap with baking soda, don’t forget to repeat the procedure a few times to check out whether every insect is dead.

    How to Get Rid of Ants Using Natural Remedies?

    In this section, I would like to share a few recipes that I’ve promised:

    • Mix baking soda and sugar in equal proportions. It will attract ants. Depending on the type of ants, they may be more attracted to peanut butter, jam, or honey. Sprinkle this mix around the doors and windows;
    • Another natural ant killer with baking soda is boric acid. Be careful with it as it may cause skin irritation. Mix soda, acid, and sugar together. Remember that the mixture is toxic;
    • Diatomaceous earth and baking soda are deadly mixes. It is non-toxic, so you can put it around your house.

    Bugs That Look Like Bed Bugs: 7 Most Common Bed Bug Look Alikes

    Being able to work with various pests infestation cases, I know how challenging it might be to find any kind of insects in your house and get rid of them once and forever. The most complicated task is eliminating bloodsucking pests such as bed bugs — highly unpleasant and annoying vermins that are hard to get rid of.

    To clean your house from pests, it is important to identify them properly. Sometimes, you might think that you have bed bugs when you actually don’t, so your pest-fighting methods won’t work as they should.

    To help you identify and effectively fight pests, I have written this guide with a detailed observation of what other bugs look like bed bugs, their characteristics, and habitat.

    Bugs That Look Like Bed Bugs: Detailed Review of the Most Popular Insects

    There are plenty of various in-house pests you might get into your household and produce serious problems. Bed bugs are the ones that are so small and similar to other pests, it is really hard to know for sure which type of bug you have faced. Let’s look through the key features of bed bugs appearance and life cycle, and proceed to their pest relatives.

    What Are Bed Bugs And How Do They Look

    A little bed bug

    Identifying what do bed bugs look like, it is important to take into account all possible features. These insects are tiny in size, ranging from 2 to 5 millimeters depending on their life cycle period, with transparent skin color at a young age that gets rust color when they reach adolescence.

    When the newborn bed bug has just had a blood meal, he turns from pale to bright red due to the small bed bug size, nearly the only moment you can see it – when the bug is feeding on your skin.

    Many people ask me: “do bed bugs fly” and “do bed bugs have wings.” In case you have seen a pest that flies, that is not a bed bug. These tiny insects have no wings and cannot fly, although adult bugs have wing vestiges or wing pads – underdeveloped signs of wings that cannot be used for flying. They are also able to move fast on the furniture, floors, and walls, settling literally everywhere in the house.

    Finding a bite is the first sign of pests infestation, and bed bugs can bite you anywhere, focusing on those body parts that are denuded while sleeping: face, neck, feet, hands, or shoulders. While you won’t feel the bite itself, after being bitten your skin might feel itchy or inflamed.

    Bed Bugs Appearance

    Bed bugs can be identified by their appearance: they have an oval-shaped flat body that gets more elongated after the meal. They have six legs and two tiny antennas that make it possible to distinguish bed bugs from arachnids or mature mites.

    Before asking how to get rid of bed bugs, it is essential to identify the type of insect you have faced. To properly identify bed bugs, I highly recommend you to look through the bed bug pictures that reveal all the details of their typical appearance.

    What Are Other Tiny Bugs in Bed That Are Not Bed Bugs

    1. Bat bugs
    2. Baby roaches
    3. Ticks
    4. Fleas
    5. Booklice
    6. Carpet beetles
    7. Spider beetles

    Although you might think you have bed bugs, this is not always true. There is a series of bugs mistaken for bed bugs that are usually misidentified because of similar appearance, bites, or spreading specifications.

    To properly identify the type of vermins that invaded your house, let’s look through the list of such pests, opposing bed bugs vs other bugs, defining their typical features, appearance, bites, and habitat.

    Bat Bugs vs Bed Bugs

    types of bugs
    Bat bugs are the most similar pests to bed bugs in their appearance – it is impossible to clearly identify whether the insect is a bat bug without a microscope: their only difference is the length of fringe hairs located near the bugs’ head.

    However, bat bugs aren’t usually in-house pests as they feed on bat’s blood and reside in the places of bat’s colonies that might be situated inside a house: in chimneys, attics, or plumbing.

    A bug on the surface

    Trying to oppose bat bugs vs bed bugs, it is possible to see the difference in the skin color: bat bugs can have beige or light brown skin color, while bed bugs have more reddish skin.

    Both insects have an oval-shaped body with non-developed wing pads and cannot fly. Bat bugs are usually found in the Midwestern US, while bed bugs are distributed worldwide.

    Baby Roaches vs Bed Bugs

    three bed bugs

    Small baby roaches are usually misidentified as bed bugs because of their similar appearance and behavior. However, unlike blood-sucking insects, baby roaches are white just after hatching, but get reddish shortly after that, becoming quite similar to bed bugs. Their nighttime activity peaks are also similar to the bed bugs’ behavior.

    The main difference that comes out while opposing baby roaches vs bed bugs is that baby roaches does not bite people. They try to hide in cracks and dark, tight spaces, staying close to the warmth, food, and moisture. Baby roaches are almost twice smaller and have a cylindrically-shaped body, while bed bugs are oval-shaped.

    Baby roaches are also highly unpleasant pests that are hard to get rid of. It gets easier to identify them as they grow and molt, so be sure you have properly identified the pest type and take quick measures for its elimination.

    Ticks vs Bed Bugs

    Ticks and Bed Bugs

    Being misidentified as bed bugs, ticks, in fact, have a few similarities with these pests: both have a flat, brown body and can feed on human blood. Thus, it is important to not only know what do ticks look like but how they are different from other insects.

    Ticks are as small as bed bugs and have no wings, so they also can’t fly. Their bites are almost unfelt and can be found nearly anywhere on your body.

    The Tick

    When talking about differences of ticks vs bed bugs, it is necessary to say that ticks are arachnids and have eight legs, while the bed pests are insects and thus have only six legs. While the latter are in-house pests, ticks are usually found outdoors, hiding in high grass or on the leaves of trees and bushes. Ticks are usually feeding on animals’ blood, although they can bite humans.

    Ticks’ bites might be dangerous, as they can carry such diseases as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, and others. While bed bugs can bite you up to 10 times and then move to other locations, ticks bite you once, getting under your skin, and can stay there for several days until they are fully saturated.

    They usually choose the body parts with hair or creases, such as armpits, legs, neck, or waistline. It is hard to remove a tick from your body, and it is important to be careful and not to leave the ticks’ head under the skin.

    Fleas vs Bed Bugs

    a flea and a bedbug

    In case you have spotted bites on your skin that might be itchy, the first two reasons might be bed bugs and fleas. Being small and quickly moving pests, fleas also create a lot of discomforts, leaving numerous bites on the human body that look and feel distressful. Both fleas and bed bugs have brown-reddish skin and don’t have wings.

    one flea

    When putting fleas vs bed bugs, it is possible to see that their appearance is different: while bed bugs have horizontally-flat bodies, fleas are vertically-flat. Both insects have six legs, fleas have longer legs and can jump up to 18 centimeters high.

    While bed-found pests prefer to feed on human blood, fleas usually bite furry animals, such as cats and dogs and live mostly outside. Flea bites aches immediately, while most people don’t feel the bites of bed bugs and can discover them only on the next morning.

    The flea bites are usually situated on the lover parts of the body, while bed pests can bite you anywhere, focusing on those body parts that are exposed during your sleep.

    Booklice vs Bed Bugs

    A Booklice

    Thanks to their size and color, booklice are mistaken for bed bugs as well, especially their nymphs: they are smaller in size and have a pale brown or creamy skin color. Booklice also has two antennas, but they are more similar to termites and have a segmented body (the head is separated from the rest of the body).

    one booklice

    Although both insects live inside the house, booklice don’t bite people and feed on mold and fungi. They can be found in places with high humidity: under wallpapers, near the windows, damp books, or in the stored food.

    Confronting booklice vs bed bugs, it can be seen that booklice is smaller and has a different appearance and living habits due to quick dehydration.

    Carpet Beetles vs Bed Bugs

    Carpet Beetles

    Carpet beetles are one of the bed bugs look-alikes that are usually misidentified because of their size and similar appearance. Carpet beetles have black skin with a white pattern and bright scales that might be orange, red, or reddish-colored. They are smaller than bed bugs, have an oval-shaped flat body with hair on it, and two small antennae.

    carpet bug on the floor

    There are numerous differences when opposing carpet beetles vs bed bugs, and the most important is that carpet beetles aren’t blood-feeders: they prefer flowers’ nectar and pollen, thus, they usually live on flowers and can get inside the house with the fresh bouquet.

    Unlike bed bugs, carpet beetles can fly, and when getting inside the house they adapt their diet, switching to natural fabrics. Carpet beetles aren’t dangerous and don’t bite people, but the direct connection with the beatles with exposed body parts might lead to allergy.

    Carpet beetles are still unpleasant house pests that might destroy carpets, clothes, and all fabrics, getting into the bed and other furniture.

    Spider Beetles vs Bed Bugs

    Carpet beetle

    One of the vermin types that can be regarded as bed bugs is spider beetles. These pests also have an oval-shaped body that has brownish color – features that are also typical for their bed-located relatives. They are slightly smaller – from 1 to 5 millimeters, depending on their type and lifecycle stage.

    They have six legs and two antennae that are usually regarded as an additional pair of legs. This makes them look similar to spiders, although they are usually misidentified for bed bugs because they look very similar to the above.

    Spider beetle

    Spider beetles are foragers and aren’t considered as extremely dangerous pests but given the right conditions and free access to food, they can develop into numerous pests colonies that might create serious problems for restaurants, hotels, food stores or hospitals.

    Spider beetles are usually active at night – the same time as bed bugs, and can be found inside walls or in the cracks or on the plants.

    Confronting spider beetles vs bed bugs, it can be seen that these insects are less disturbing, they don’t bite people or animals and prefer to live near the food or moisture, hiding from humans.

    How Long Do Ants Live and What You Can Do About It

    There are numerous factors that define the longevity of ants’ life. I am going to tell you more about them. The first thing you need to understand is that you can’t simply rely on the shortness of these insects’ life, hoping that they will die on their own. If ants invaded your property, you will have to take measures, as they can live there for decades.

    My personal experience, as a professional entomologist and private consultant, shows that these small insects may be hard to get rid of without proper measures. But if you are willing to learn everything about this problem, I am eager to help you. Let’s talk about the ant lifespan.

    Manual into Ants’ Lifetime

    ants drinking water

    The average lifespan of an ant varies depending on numerous factors. This information is important in case your house or yard has been invaded by these insects. You may check out these factors:

    • The caste of ants’ colony;
    • Species of ants;
    • The area of habitat. Ants in cooler areas live longer, surviving winters in hibernation;
    • Quality of food and water;
    • The shelter that protects the whole colony.

    Providing access to your food, you automatically extend the life of ants. The whole colony may exist on your supplies from the kitchen. While ants are an important part of this world, and they have important roles in nature, it does not mean that they have to prosper in your apartment or house.

    The Role in the Caste System

    Ants-are-fighting

    While some ants have a longer life, others live just a few months. One of the main factors that must be taken into consideration is the social role of the longest living ant in the colony. The types of ants:

    • Male ants are those who live during the smallest period of time. They have to mate with females, and after that, they die. Male ants live for a few days after reaching adulthood.
    • Worker ants support the life of the colony. They take care of others, being non reproducing females. Their lives are several years long, on average.
    • Queen ants can live for 30 years or so. They lay eggs and produce other members of the colony. They will not be able to survive without a worker and male ants.

    Here is the explanation of why some ants live longer than others. This is the reason why it is difficult to answer what is the lifespan of an ant. It depends on the place in the social hierarchy or caste that a particular ant belongs to. Anyway, the queen of ants lives longer than other members of the colony, but this insect is dependable of others.

    Species

    Ants are fighting

    Different species have different longevity of life. The most common fire ants’ workers live only five weeks in general. However, odorous house ants’ workers can survive inside your home for up to 3 years.

    The Life Cycle

    During their lives, ants experience numerous metamorphoses that change their bodies. They have three-stage of growing up before they will be adults. While the average life of this insect is not long, they all pass the complete ant’s life cycle:

    • Egg. The cycle of ant’s life begins with an egg. Fertilized eggs are females, while unfertilized ones are males;
    • Larva. Larva looks like a tiny worm. It does not even have eyes. Larva requires a lot of food, and workers are feeding them;
    • Pupa is another metamorphosis. They look like adults, but still with wings and antennae pressed close to their bodies. Some species of ants can spin cocoons around their bodies for protection on this stage of development;
    • Adult. This is the final stage of life. These ants are full-grown and ready to reproduce. The exoskeleton is already developed.

    ant lifecycle

    Depending on the specie and the region, this life cycle can vary by time. Usually, it takes up to several months to progress from an egg to an adult. Sometimes it takes only a few weeks.

    FAQ

    What Is the Average Lifespan of an Ant?

    As I’ve told you before, the longevity of the life of these insects depends on many factors. Usually, males live just for a few weeks after reaching adulthood. They mate and die.

    Worker ant lifespan is a little bit longer. Workers that are the main feeders and protectors of the colony die after several months of adult life. Queens live up to twenty-thirty years, depending on the prosperity of the colony and inside/outside conditions.

    In a tropical climate, ants do not hibernate. They stay active for the whole year. In cooler areas, they hibernate in winter.

    How Fast Do Ants Reproduce?

    The adult age of ants separates them by castes. Only queen ants that live longer can lay eggs. However, they can’t do it without male ants which usually die after mating with queens. Queens do not stop laying eggs even for a day.

    They produce up to thousands of eggs per day. It does not mean that every egg survives. However, the population of ants rises extremely quickly. In a few years, the population of ants can grow to the million in a colony.

    How Long Do Queen Ants Live?

    Queen ants live longer than other members of the colony. Usually, they can survive for 30 years, in proper conditions, and depending on the hard work of other ants. They require feeding and protection of workers as well as mating with male ants.

    How Big Can Ants Get?

    On average, adult species reach 2 inches. The size varies from 0.03 to 2 inches. However, queens can grow bigger than 2 inches. The biggest ants noted by scientists reached 5.9 inches. But they have not survived till our days.

    How Long Can Ants Live Without Food?

    While the food gives ants energy, they can easily survive for a couple of weeks. Workers will do everything to save queens. However, without proper feeding, the colony will not be growing.

    Can’t We Just Wait Till They Die?

    In some rare cases, worker ants can live for several years, and queens may hold on for decades. It does not mean that they are going to live this long. However, as I have already mentioned, ants reproduce quickly and lay thousands of eggs almost every day.

    Without your actions, the colony will grow to feed on your food and drinking your water. It is important to realize that even after the first generation is dead, the colony still survives.

    If you had a deal with ants previously, share your experience in the comments below. How long did they live in your home?
