    Getting Rid of Skunk Smell: What to Do and How to Do It

    skunk on the porch

    Skunks are known to be innocuous to people and vegetation. They pose no danger and mean no harm, but the trace they leave behind is a real disaster. There is an array of things and approaches that can assist you in eliminating skunk odors. First, let’s learn a little more about dealing with skunks and odor abatement.

    Is a skunk spray dangerous?

    No, it isn’t, if you follow all the instructions properly. You see, every skunk spray remover is normally composed of natural extracts, like garlic, for example. When used moderately, the elements are completely harmless to humans and animals. They create a miasma that skunks simply cannot stand, thus forcing them to flee and avoid the area.

    However, if there is a high concentration of it in an enclosed area, some issues may occur. Generally, a spray can cause minor eye and nasal irritation, redness, or coughing. To prevent any unfortunate occasions, make sure to follow the instructions, and wear protective gear if it’s recommended.

    What does a skunk spray smell like?

    As much as the spray is harmless, it can be nasty. It has quite a lot of sulfur, thus making skunk smell removal rather complicated. The element gives off the smell that is very close to the one spoilt eggs have. Interestingly, the smell is rather neutral at first.

    But after some time in the fresh air, it worsens and becomes less and less pleasant. The effect wears off shortly afterward, but if it has got onto clothes or hair, it can stay longer and be somewhat difficult to get rid of.

    How to get rid of skunk smell?

    skunk in the grass

    The best way to remove skunk smell is to combine different methods to ensure effectiveness. Cleaning only the polluted area won’t make much difference in the long run, since the smell is rather sticky and can easily transfer from one place to another.

    However, approaching the problem from different sides and using prevention methods can help you clear your household from the smell for good.

    Step 1: Ventilating the area with fresh air

    If a skunk has left a smelly print in an enclosed area, letting in some freshness is a must. Open up every window and door in the room to improve the in-room air circulation. Also, the sun can accelerate the smell particles’ decomposition, which speeds up the refreshment.

    The same should be applied to contaminated fabrics. After washing the items, put them outside under direct sunlight and in the draught to get the skunk smell out more naturally. Drying items in a machine won’t be as effective as it is in the open air because dryers use the same air over and over again, providing no circulation.

    On the other hand, you may have a contaminated area outside the house. Then, opening the windows won’t do the trick but rather drag the smell inside, polluting the furniture, carpets, and clothes. On the contrary, you had better seal everything off to prevent further contamination.

    Step 2: Deodorizing your home

    Use a set of freshers to cover the smell and neutralize the skunk odor indoors. Depending on the scale of the problem, you can choose:

    Special air fresheners. They come in a variety of formulas that can suit specific cases of contamination. For instance, a spray freshener should be on hand when the smell has soaked into the walls and furniture. It covers a larger area and provides additional protection against the odor’s spreading.

    Also, there are granules that you can scatter around under the furniture or in places that are difficult to reach with a spray.

    Natural remedies. Vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and others can be used for such purposes. Get a bowl full of water and combine it with some white vinegar. Place the bowl in the contaminated room and keep the window open. This skunk removal recipe is also great for dealing with other kinds of unpleasant odors, like mold, dampness, or even urine.

    Step 3: Clean the source of the smell

    If you know the exact spot contaminated by a skunk, you should get to it promptly before it will deposit and be impossible to clean up.

    Carpets. Use cleaning powders for fabrics and apply them to carpets and mats. When the treatment has absorbed the odor, you can vacuum-clean it or rub it out with a wet brush. Also, it’s advised to use a steam-based dryer and go through the carpets a couple of times to let the smell evaporate.

    Furniture and floors. Mix ¼ of a liter of bleach with 3-4 liters of water. Make sure that the water is warm but not too hot since it can harm the wood. Also, use natural detergents because chemicals can leave residues. Apply this mixture to hard surfaces a couple of times and rub it in well.

    Step 4: Removing skunk odor from clothes

    Getting rid of the smell out of clothes is unlikely to be effective using natural remedies because fabrics tend to trap the particles. Here, you can do a few things:

    Mix laundry detergent with ½ cup of baking soda and combine the mixture with warm water. Put the clothes in and let them soak for about 2 hours. While it’s soaking, you can rub the clothes together and add some dish soap for a better effect. Later, run the clothes through a cycle of machine-washing and, again, add some soda.

    Instead of detergent, you can use hydrogen peroxide. This way, make a solution of hydrogen peroxide and soda (1:6). It can also come in handy for cleaning carpets and animal fur. When the solution is applied, run it through a washing cycle and hang the clothes to dry in the sun.

    Step 5: Clean pets and yourself

    What absorbs skunk odor from human skin and pet fur the best is hydrogen peroxide and simple dish soap.
    Use 1 liter of low-concentration hydrogen peroxide and 4 full tablespoons of baking soda until you have a bubbling reaction. If the stench is too extreme, add more soda.

    Combine it with dish soap (1 tablespoon) in a big bowl. Cover the contaminated areas with a thick layer of the solution. Rub it in the fur or skin and leave it for about 10 minutes. Afterward, wash out the substance with warm water a couple of times. If needed, repeat the process once more.

    Also, you can use de-skunk shampoo. It doesn’t require any additional ingredients and is completely friendly to the skin and fur. Apply it to the contaminated areas, rub it in thoroughly, and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then, rinse it down with water once or twice.

    Dog Got Sprayed by a Skunk: How to Act and What Remedies to Use

    Skunks are a very unpleasant-smelling threat to humans and animals, and of course, people try to avoid meeting them. The secretion of skunks has an almost suffocating effect for everyone. Breathing next to a skunk is simply impossible, but if this liquid gets on your clothes, you should get rid of them immediately.

    However, if your pets get sprayed by a skunk, it’s important to take them to the vet. For example, if the liquid gets into the eyes, this can cause real life-threatening problems. So, what to do if your dog got sprayed by skunk?

    How to Save the Life of a Skunked Dog?

    In fact, a skunk does not attack unless it feels the danger. But, imagine the situation: you are walking the dog, and then the animal begins to bark and growl at the sight of a skunk. Of course, the skunk will assess this as a threat to its life and try to defend itself. So, if your dog is in trouble, let’s figure out what to do with it and how to react.

    Is skunk spray dangerous for my dog?

    It’s no secret that nature has endowed skunks with special scent glands that protect them from the attacks of other animals. There are two glands, and both of them are located under the tail of the animal.

    The most interesting thing is that they are able to aim at their enemy very accurately and release a terribly smelling jet at them, which can easily fly a distance of several inches. Skunks have the ability to regulate the amount of fluid sprayed. They can shoot both one or two glands at the same time. The number of “shots” is 5-7 on average.

    The liquid has a disgusting smell, and if it gets on the skin, the poor animal will lose the ability to breathe. And if liquids get into the eyes of a pet, it may even go blind for a while.

    How to Get Rid of Skunk Smell on a Dog: Complete Guide to Skunk Off a Dog

    two autumn skunks

    Be careful with your furry friend, and use this emergency plan to get rid of the smell quickly.

    Step 1: Keep your dog outside

    If your dog got sprayed by a skunk, you have to do everything to make it breathe easier. Remember that skunk’s scent has an awful odor, so your first action is to let your dog out if it lives inside the house. First of all, the pet gets the opportunity to breathe fresh air, and the second thing is that it won’t bring the smell in the house.

    Step 2: Get a de-skunk shampoo or mix the homemade remedy

    Luckily, the manufacturers of pet care products have managed to create special skunk smell removal remedies. You can purchase one (for example, from the list below) or make a DIY solution to get rid of the nasty smell. If you choose the second method, get all the needed ingredients:

    • 1 quart of 3-percent hydrogen peroxide,
    • 1/4 cup baking soda,
    • 1 teaspoon liquid dishwashing soap.

    Mix it all together and wash your dog with this solution carefully. I’d recommend using special disposable gloves and masks to avoid the smell.

    Step 3: Clean and rinse

    After the skunk bath for the dog is done, make sure you rinse the pet and your hands scrupulously, so no smells and unpleasant odors stay on your and animal’s skin.

    Step 4: Wash with a regular shampoo

    Proceed by applying the regular dog shampoo you use to wash your pet. It’s important to clean all dishwashing and hydrogen peroxide remains from the fur and skin of the animal. By the way, I also bring some of my dog’s favorite toys to ease the long bathing process.

    Step 5: Clean yourself

    Of course, once you’re done with cleaning your skunked dog, you have to clean yourself. Wash your clothes and take a hot tub or a quick shower to get rid of any smell that may remain.

    What if a dog got sprayed by a skunk in the face?

    dog running with tennis ball

    If your dog got skunked in face – don’t panic. Instead, take turns to deal with the smell of a dog sprayed by skunk.

    • Has it been bitten or scratched? Check for visible injuries on the pet.

    If so, take your dog to the vet immediately, as skunks are dangerous, not only because of their smell.

    These small pests can also carry dangerous diseases (e.g., rabies).

    • Be sure to check your dog’s eyes.

    If your dog gets a direct spray of skunk secretion in the face, its eyes could be splattered and irritated. If this happens, flush the eyes of a pet well with cool water or use a special eye washing treatment made for dogs.

    • Leave it outside.

    Be tough and resist the puppy eyes. The skunk’s spray is made of oils, so once the dog gets inside the house, you’ll get a lot of problems with getting rid of that smell.

    Conventional wire racks are not very suitable for skunk eliminating — there is always a risk of getting an odorous spray jet in response. So, scientists have come up with special plastic traps.

    Their integral walls reliably protect a person from stinky secretions of an animal. But you can’t be too careful, so when transporting an animal in a trap, it is better to throw a blanket over it.

    Spray Repellents

    Many states have laws prohibiting the killing of skunks, so the use of poisons is out of the question. There are humane ways to scare away these animals with sprays that have an unpleasant odor for skunks. These are the following:

    • sprays containing predator secretions;
    • pepper sprays;
    • rags moistened with ammonia;
    • peels of orange or lemon or sprays with a citrus odor.

    Granules Repellents

    Granules repellents are easy to use because you just have to spread small granules all over your yard. Most often, granules are not intended to use indoors. Natural skunk repellent has a special odor to scare away skunks. Whenever a pest wants to come to your territory, the scent of granules will scare them away.

    How to Repel Skunks

    skunk

    You should pay attention to the smells near your home and farm buildings. If you start to smell musty odors, there may be skunks nearby. This is the first step when you begin repelling skunks.

    Protect your buildings by setting a trap. First of all, remove attractants, natural or synthetic substances that attract living organisms that stimulate their nutrition.

    If the skunk was trapped in a garage, then open the door at dusk and close it late in the evening. Since skunks are nocturnal animals, you can close the door behind one of them, and the animal will have to look for a new home.

    Check your windows. Skunks sometimes get there and cannot get out. You can try to make a wooden and wire mesh and install it at an angle of 45 degrees in the window openings. A skunk should have enough power to go out on this grid on its own. If this does not work, you should immediately call a pest control service and tell them about skunk nuisance problems.

    Find the skunk’s den. If you feel an incessant sour and musky smell near a hole in the ground under the porch or elsewhere, you have to determine if this is the skunk’s den. Fill the top of the den with leaves throughout the day, while the skunk is likely to sleep. Come back in the morning and see if the leaves have been broken.

    Dip a piece of cloth in ammonia and place it inside the entrance to the skunk’s den. The smell of ammonia is also unpleasant for a skunk.

    Using Electronic Skunk Deterrents vs Using Granular Repellent vs Spray Repellent

    Various repellers may differ in efficiency, power, and duration of action. Many people prefer to use various ultrasonic electronic skunk repellent because the use of this type of device is one of the most effective and reliable skunk repellents that work. Ultrasonic devices are completely safe for the person that uses them, which is why they are so common today.

    electronic skunk repellent

    Almost all granules contain natural active ingredients. Many granules are based on natural ingredients that give off a strong repellent odor. This allows skunks to stay at a distance and even disappear forever from your home site.

    When skunks become a problem, spray repellents are also very popular. Most often, they are sold ready for use, and all you need to do is spray at the right place.

    On the market, you can find skunk repellent spray for indoor and outdoor use. They necessarily contain a smelling active substance that repels pests and rodents, such as skunks, badgers, raccoons, etc. for a long time.

    What Smells Do Skunks Hate?

    Skunks have an excellent sense of smell, and therefore, they are scared of pronounced odors, such as citrus fruits or peppermint. Many gardeners make homemade skunk repellents using orange or peppermint oil. When an animal feels this smell, it will no longer want to appear in your yard.

    Do Moth Balls Repel Skunks?

    Certainly. To expel pests such as skunks from your garage or barn, you just need to put a few mothballs in the room, and pests will immediately start to bypass this place and look for other places to dwell. To prevent skunks from entering the territory, you need to place mothballs around, and the pests will never appear.

    Do Skunks Like Light?

    Skunks are nocturnal animals and avoid bright light. A courtyard illuminated at night will be much less attractive to skunks. However, you run the risk of attracting insects that love bright light, such as crickets and moths. Since the light will stay on all night, consider using solar or energy-efficient lighting to avoid getting high electricity bills.

    What do Skunks Eat?

    skunk

    Skunks are omnivorous, meaning they gladly eat both plant and animal food. They also eat worms and adult insects, or their larvae.

    They like to enjoy frogs, snakes, bird eggs, seeds, fruits, fish. Sound and smell sensitivity helps them find food since their vision is poorly developed.

    Conclusion

    Skunks are not the most pleasant animals, and therefore, it is important to know how to scare them away. This will save you from meeting this pest again, and you won’t have to rack your brains on how to remove the stinky smell of its secretion.

A skunk can spray you, your house or yard, or your pets, which will then emit an unpleasant odor. However, no need to be afraid because you can always get rid of both the smell and the animal.

    I will share with you interesting information about what the “skunk secret” is, why this animal is considered the smelliest, and how to scare away a skunk. Besides, I will tell you about the dangerous outcomes after meeting with this animal.

    Also, I compiled a review of 6 best skunk traps and repellents, so you don’t have to bother yourself anymore with the issue of how to get rid of skunks quickly.

    The Buyer’s Guide

    To know how to repel skunk as soon as possible from your household, you should be aware of the basic characteristics of skunks. I will tell you about how to determine these animals on your territory and why they are dangerous.

    What Are Skunks?

    skunk

    Skunk is a small animal whose size is approximate to a cat’s. The length of the body is 13-18 inches, the tail is 7-10 inches, and the weight of an adult skunk is, on average, up to 15 lbs. Males are slightly larger than females.

    Skunks have a triangular muzzle with small rounded ears and small black shiny eyes. They have a white arrow on the black muzzle, wide white or yellowish stripes on both sides of the body.

    You can easily recognize a skunk by its “signature” white and black colors. Just remember that the white spots or stripes and/or spots are located on a black background.

    Skunks are very strong physically. They have short legs with sharp claws for digging. Skunks have poor eyesight, but this deficiency is more than compensated by the sense of smell and hearing. You can use these features to solve the question of how to repel skunks. Their maximum life expectancy in captivity is 13 years. In nature, skunks live much less — an average of 5-6 years.

    Skunk vs Badger vs Raccoon: Main Differences

    Raccoon, badger, and skunk are animals that belong to different families, nevertheless, there are certain similarities between them. Controlling nuisance skunks, raccoons, and other critters may seem a difficult task. However, if you study everything about these animals, you will successfully fight them. To understand how to deter skunks, you need to familiarize yourself with a brief description of these animals.

    raccoon at the left side, skunk at the right

    A raccoon is considered a predator, however, its diet includes quite a lot of plant foods. This animal prefers to hunt at night. Reptiles, small rodents, frogs, birds, and their eggs, fish, as well as crabs and crayfish, become its prey. Besides, raccoons eat insects. If we take into account plant foods, the main sources of raccoon energy are fruits, vegetables, berries, nuts, and mushrooms.

    Badger hibernates in winter. To somehow survive this season without food, it needs to have a large amount of fat. A badger uses burrows as housing and digs them exclusively on its own. The structure of the badger den can be quite complicated.

    Initially, the animals dig one entrance, a long tunnel, and a nesting chamber, then build additional inputs/outputs. The total number of various manholes can be more than 10.

    A raccoon has a striped tail, but a badger does not. Its stripes are smaller in comparison with the badger, and its legs are more developed and resemble the legs of primates. Animals can climb trees and grab the necessary objects. The badger is called a predator, although, in fact, this animal, like a bear, is an omnivorous creature.

    The honey badger

    Skunks are intelligent animals. They are also extremely inventive. Skunks are very strong for their size. If it’s needed, they can move almost any object in the house. Besides, skunks are extremely curious. They will knock over trash bins, drop flower pots, pull out drawers, and tumblers just to see what is inside.

    Comparing raccoons with a skunk, the first one a very viable animal. In the USA, raccoons are sometimes kept as tame animals. They are immune to many infectious and invasive illnesses and aggressively defend themselves from predators. Raccoons run through trees better than squirrels!

    How do Skunks Appear in Your Home and Yard?

    skunk in the garden

    Wild skunks differ from other animals by their small size and unique colors of wool. They protect themselves by spraying a dangerous substance from their anal glands. They can cause problems with domestic animals that do not accept skunk warning signs.

    For instance, a skunk can spray your pets, and at this moment, removing the skunk odor process becomes more complicated than you think. In such case, you will need to use special skunk odor removers or a potent mix of home remedies.

    As with most pest problems, preventing skunks’ disposal is easier than completing the full skunk elimination. You can scare skunks away using bright lights, ammonia, noise, and traps. To know how to keep skunks out of your yard, you should examine the territory:

    • Look for holes in farm buildings. Hangars, garages, balconies, and all basements are prone to skunk infiltration. If you have openings in the foundation or between the panels, they must be closed immediately, until the female skunk has settled there and brought offspring.
    • Particularly important is the examination of farm buildings in the fall. When the weather gets cold, skunks usually look for safe and dry places.
    • Create L -shaped obstacles near the porch. The lower part of these constructions will stop the skunks from digging under the porch to get into their den.
    • Treat larvae on your lawn. If you have beetles already in June, then skunks will try to have them as food. While the larvae are at their growing stage, it is necessary to water your lawn minimally, because too watered and damp areas of the lawn help raise the larvae to the surface.
    • When you lay a freshly rolled lawn, pay attention to skunks.
    • Small holes in the lawn are the first signs of a skunk infestation.
    • Remove food for pets from their feeders. These are food sources for the female skunk and her offspring.
    • Protect your trash heap. Put all the rubbish in a metal bin. In the open bin, a lot of garbage is very attractive for a skunk as a food product.

    Are Skunks Dangerous?

    Are Skunks Dangerous

    Striped skunks are modest, inconspicuous, and conflict-free animals. They lead a mostly solitary lifestyle, except for the short mating season. However, they are calm about the presence of representatives of their species.

    Skunks give off a secret with a caustic and hazardous substance. The smell resembles sulfur because it consists of sulfur-organic compounds. The main components of the secret are ethanethiol and butyl mercaptan. These substances are not only disgusting in smell, but also toxic: they can act like tear gas, so beware of getting musk into your eyes.

    The toxicity of this substance is also the cause of why skunk smell is so hard to get rid of. This oily liquid will cause a temporary loss of vision for approximately 15 minutes. A person may immediately feel dizzy (up to a swoon), with nausea and vomiting appear.

    By the way, not all people can smell sulfur. It seems to some people that the skunk smells of burnt rubber, rotten garlic, and even spoiled meat. So the soiled clothes and the stinking dog’s hair is not the worst case (unless your dog got skunked). If you notice that the skunk begins to lift its tail and wave it, you should get back immediately. But don’t do it roughly, and try to make slow and careful motions.

    How to Deal With a Skunk that is in Your Yard?

    skunk in the yard

    Acknowledging yourself with information about how to scare skunks away from your house is the best way to get rid of them forever. Following these instructions will help you in this process:

    • Initially remove attractant food from reachable places and skunk-friendly housing. Skunks like to live in dark places, such as under the floor, porch, and other protected areas. Close skunk-friendly places with anything hard like stones, fences, and plywood.
    • You should take care of closed and difficult to approach places because these are the first ones where skunks will want to set up their home for further colonization.
    • Most often skunks eat carrion. If you have fruit trees in the household, pick the fruits as soon as they ripen to prevent carrion appearance.
    • Other vegetation, such as mowed grass, must also be disposed of since it contains a source of nutrition that skunks like.
    • If possible, store garbage bins at night in a garage or barn so skunks are not attracted by these smells.
    • Use a closed compost tank, as skunks like to eat spoiled peels from fruits and vegetables, or eggshells, and other waste that may be in compost.
    • It would be better to set up traps only during the non-breeding season. Otherwise, you will crucially harm the skunks’ family if you trap an adult female. Probably, its babies will die of starvation.

    How to Get Rid of Skunks?

    Let’s say that you discovered where skunks made a den in your household. I recommend you follow these steps for successful dealing with skunks.

    1. The first thing in a skunk’s eliminating process is removing your pet’s food and trash because this food works as an attractant for them.
    2. By the way, raccoons also like to eat such food.
    3. Find a place where skunks’ families live. Watch the animal from home or at a distance.
    4. You better not to bump or scare a skunk because you risk being sprayed. Therefore, use only efficient skunk repellents that work.
    5. To make the proven by years natural repellent mix, combine cayenne red pepper, Cajun seasoning, and other hot condiments that you have.
    6. Fill approximately 1/4 of the sandwich zip bag with the mixture. Mix it well until it reaches the smooth consistency.
    7. When the skunk is not nearby, sprinkle the contents of the package right in front of the entrance to the den.
    8. The skunk will eat or smell this mixture and gets uncomfortable in the den. Soon after this, the animal will leave.

    Important! Since skunks can eat garbage, keep it out of reach, otherwise, you will have to constantly clean it. Skunks are super sensitive to light and noise, so you can make every possible noise and enhance the outdoor lighting when getting rid of skunks under the house so that the animal feels uncomfortable and leaves.

    There are plenty of ways that will help you to cope with skunks in your territory, and each is effective by its characteristics. So, here I selected some tips about the right use of traps and sprays, for the results to be more efficient.

    Start with the most innovative repellents and try an ultrasonic one. Usually, these repellers have automatically built-in motion sensors that will turn on when a skunk approaches. Also, these devices have a flashlight that also will come on when a skunk is nearby.

    Try to use skunk repellent chemicals. There are several well-known skunk deterrents with active chemicals. You should spread the chemicals wherever you think skunks live at the moment. As soon as they smell these scents, they will begin to avoid your areas. You should remember that chemical repellents are required to be updated every few days.

    The interesting repellent is fox and dog urine. These odors scare skunks away, as these are their natural enemies. You can buy deterrents that contain dog or fox urine in specialized stores. Pepper or peppermint sprays are also great helpers in skunk prevention. Spray these in areas where you notice skunks.

    The citrus plant sprays also have the qualities of a repellent. Though spreading orange or lemon peels around your household is not the best way to eliminate skunks.

    FAQ

    The skunk repellent process is not the easiest one because it requires a lot of preparation and following the basic rules. We’ve talked about the main features of skunks’ life. I want to answer some of the questions that you may also be interested in.

    Do Skunks Bite?

    the-evil-skunk

    If the skunk is scared, the animal releases a trickle of the secret with amazing accuracy. At the same time, the nature of each skunk is manifested individually: some spray non-stop until the stock in the glands runs out, and then begin to bite. Others behave calmly and do not spray after they’re captured.

    What Sound Does a Skunk Make?

    Skunks are mostly silent animals, but they can make a few sounds, depending on the situation. In domestic skunks, most often, you can hear a loud hiss, which pregnant and lactating females make if they are disturbed.

    When Do Skunks Have Babies?

    baby skuns

    By nature, skunks are loners. Only during the “wedding” period, they are looking for a mate, and a female can bring up to 10 cubs 2 months after mating. They appear in May, and already in August, move back to the independent lifestyle.

    The period of active mating of skunks happens in early autumn, approximately in September. By October, sperm production in males ceases. Females become fully sexually mature a year after birth, and estrus in such an animal appears only in September.

    Skunks belong to polygamous animals, therefore, males can mate with several females at once, but do not take part in caring for offsprings.

    What is the Best Bait to Trap a Skunk?

    Trapping a skunk is one of the easiest steps. To lure them, you need to put a trap right at the entrance to the skunk’s hole and put something tasty for the animal inside the trap. Skunks are very fond of peanut butter, food for cats or dogs, peeling fruits or vegetables, as well as canned sardines.

    Thanks to this method, you can easily and effortlessly catch a skunk and take it to a place more safe and far from your site. This method is considered one of the most effective and humane skunk extermination methods.

    When Do Skunks Come Out

    The lifestyle of skunks is determined by the natural rhythms of their life. They most often live alone or in small families. They spend the winter period in their burrows, which they dig beforehand. Further, with the onset of spring, they emerge from the holes and become active animals.

    They spend summer and autumn in search of stocks and safe burrows for wintering. Skunks prefer to be active at night and search for food after sunset and come back when it starts to lighten.

    Specifications:

    • Lifetime Warranty
    • Material: Alloy Steel
    • Item Weight: ‎8.9 pounds
    • Target Species: Cat, Opossum, Squirrel, Skunk
    • Length: 24 1/2 inches
    • Pipe: 6 inch diameter, 3/16 inch thick PVC pipe
    • Door: Guillotine style with viewing holes. The guillotine style door allows you to place the trap right up to the hole

    6 Tuff Trap

    The Snare Shop product is multi-trapping. I mean it can catch not only skunks but also possums, cats, rabbits, etc. To attract your target, make a measured choice about a bait. Don’t expect to trap a skunk with a nut. Firstly, check a suggested animal list that is on the manual leaflet.

    It is a pipe, which is 24 inches long and 6 inches in diameter. The pipe is made from polyvinyl, but a guillotine-style door and other parts are steel. Due to its dimensions, the skunk can’t lift the tail and spray the musk inside the trap. Thus, it simplifies transportation and prevents from the appearance of the extra odor.

    The Tuff Trap is a variable kind of a trap: you can use it as a live or a fatal one. You can release the animal according to the Release Policy of your state. Or you may choose not a humane way like putting the whole trap under water.

    Pros:Cons:
    • the application takes few minutes;
    • suitable for small rodents;
    • easy to clean;
    • simple, but stylish design;
    • easily to transport the cached animal;
    • has a lifetime warranty.
    • may be too small for a big skunk.

    2. JT Eaton 475N Catch/Release Skunk Trap — a Live Skunk Trap

    Specifications:

    • Material: Plastic
    • Color: Black
    • Item Weight: 9.12 Pounds‎
    • Item Dimensions LxWxH: 30 x 7 x 8 inches
    • Target Species: Skunks

    It is a black rectangular tunnel with a window to check which animal you have trapped in.

    JT Eaton 475N is designed as a humane trap to keep the rodents safe and unhurt. Meanwhile, polyethylene construction has many sharp angles. The pests might cut themselves and leave blood drops inside. Don’t forget to clean the trap scrupulously before the next usage. The reason is the smell of another animal presence may scare away the one you want to catch.

    This trap has two doors on the opposite walls. The main is a spring-loaded door with a delicate trigger and easy-to-set mechanism. The secondary door has holes in it to attract the animal with the bait’s smell and a closing hook above.

    Despite the problems with the material such as thin doors, the gaps between the doors and walls, sharp corners, you can easily update it. It could be a base for your ideal trap.

    Pros:Cons:
    • easy-to-set trap;
    • keeps the trapped animal calm;
    • provides simple access to the bait section;
    • has one year limited warranty.
    • the material is not so harmless and durable as described.

    3. Ouell Traps 4-11 — a Deadly Trap for Killing Skunks

    Specifications:

    • Material: Metal
    • Safe installation: Built-In animal remover lever, no contact with animal
    • Item Weight: 2.35 pounds
    • Item Dimensions LxWxH: 6 x 5.8 x 1.7 inches
    • Target Species: Weasel, Mink, Skunk

    Ouell Traps 4-11

    The Pièges Ouell is Canadian company. It has a certification of the international humane trapping standards, so its products are designed in accordance with no cruelty policy.

    It is a high-performance environmental trap from skunks, weasels, marmots, minks, and ermines. It is made from thick galvanized metal, so the animal couldn’t break it out or escape.

    Speaking about the effectiveness, the triggered mechanism is planned to break the pest`s neck to kill the animal in less than 10 seconds. However, big rodents may be caught behind the head that won’t cause immediate death. In such cases, be ready to release the animal from torments.

    Pros:Cons:
    • long-termed construction;
    • resistant to any weather conditions;
    • fatal effect;
    • has the animal remover lever, so you won’t contact with a dead pest;
    • eco-friendly.
    • be careful during the application;
    • may be dangerous for children and pets.

    4. No. 6 Skunk-n-More Live Trap — a Spray Proof Skunk Trap

    Specifications:

    • Lifetime Warranty
    • Material: Pvc, Zinc, Steel
    • Item Weight: ‎5.95 pounds
    • Item Dimensions LxWxH: ‎26 x 8.5 x 7 inches
    • Target Species: Cat, Rabbit, Opossum, Skunk

    No. 6 Skunk-N-More Live Trap No Spray Skunk Trap

    This is another black polyvinyl pipe with two doors at each end. The entrance door is constructed as a guillotine for a faster closing. The other — bait installation door — is on a pivot.

    Such construction helps to put the bait right near the back door, so the animal will walk through all the length of the pipe and push the 3-way trigger system that will provoke the guillotine mechanism. Both doors have the windows for you to check whom you have caught.

    The skunk trapped in No. 6 Live wouldn’t be able to move, straight the back, and spray because the pipe’s dimensions are 6 inches for 24 inches. Therefore, it would keep the pest motionless.

    It doesn’t need extra effort in the setting process and use. But the trap’s weak point is in PVC. Imagine that you found an excellent place for the No. 6 model under the apple tree in your garden. You caught 2 possums, 1 skunk, and 3 squirrels.

    The results were fantastic, except one thing — the last-trapped squirrel chewed out the hole near the door. Thus, the rodents may open the door from inside and run away. Mind that you can update every part with steel layers.

    Pros:Cons:
    • live trap;
    • suits different rodent species;
    • made by a reliable brand Z traps;
    • spray-preventing design.
    • easy-to-chew-through material.

    5. Havahart 1030 Live Animal Two-Door Trap — a Product for Humane Trapping Skunks

    Specifications:

    • Material: Metal
    • Special Features: Maximum resistance to rust and corrosion
    • Item Weight: ‎5.6 Pounds
    • Item Dimensions LxWxH: 25 x 7 x 7 inches
    • Target Species: Rabbit, Squirrel, Mink, Skunk

    Havahart 1030 Live Animal Two-Door Trap

    Havahart 1030 live trap is a steel cage with smooth inner edges that protects animals from injuries. It is a galvanized and rust-resistant device that is constructed for a long lifespan.

    This 25 x 7 x 7 inches device has two spring-loaded doors that are triggered by a bait plate in the middle of the tunnel-like cage. Sometimes, a bait may fall the bait plate, so try to put the smelly food under the construction to make animals push the trigger.

    The upper side is covered with a steel top that protects the handle. So, the item won’t take extra effort in usage and transportation.

    Pros:Cons:
    • suits skunks, big squirrels, rabbits, and minks;
    • designed for a durable use;
    • easy to transport;
    • its small size prevents from skunk spraying
    • may not hold a big pest;
    • be careful with trapped animals.

    A Buyer’s Guide and FAQ

    I hope you have paid attention to the fact there are various kinds of devices for trapping skunks as well as those intended for killing skunks.

    Their main difference lies not only in their function but also in design. Traps that are supposed to keep the animal alive look like pipes or tunnels with movable doors.

    At the same time, fatal traps are massive steel constructions that remind slightly a giant mousetrap. Use the different trap types in accordance with your state restrictions.

    How to Trap Skunks (Tips for Successful Trapping)

    fluffy skunk in the stones

    If you decide to install the skunk trap on your property, I prepared these tips for successful trapping for you.

    1. Identify where the skunk’s hole is.
    2. Put the trap in front of the hole or in the nearest area, so the animal will go out just into it.
    3. If you don’t know where the pest’s nest is, try to predict where animals are used to walk often.
    4. Put the trap on the flat stable ground. The stability is necessary for successful caching.
    5. Push the bait as close to the back wall as possible, so the pest must walk into the tap to reach the delicacy.
    6. Set the mechanism carefully and check the efficiency of the trigger.
    7. Use gloves when applying the trap. It will protect your hands and keep the unwanted human scent from the trap.

    Using Traps vs Using Poison

    If you are thinking about more radical options like using poison., mind that skunks are protected in some states of the USA, so you need to check Skunk Control Rules. If you use the poison, it won’t kill the rodent immediately. The animal may start to choke in a few hours or earlier.

    skunk alert

    When skunks are ready to die, they choose silent, distant places somewhere between roots and pass away there. In such case, you will feel a decent smell in a few weeks. So, it may be quite challenging to find a body at first.

    FAQ

    What to Put in a Tap to Catch a Skunk?

    The best bait for skunks is cat food, which is not convenient for cat owners. Also, any kind of fish products attracts the pest. Thus, you can put an empty tuna fish with the leftovers still in it inside the trap. If you are worried about your cats, try marshmallows or peanut butter.

    How Long Can a Skunk Live in a Trap?

    If you caught the animal in a live skunk trap, the pest would starve to death in 2-3 days. That is why you should check your traps regularly.

    How to Remove a Skunk from a Trap?

    If you use a killing trap, wear gloves to protect your skin and remove the body carefully.

    If it is a catch-and-release trap, transport the animal carefully to a forest. Try to make the transportation as smooth as possible to keep the pest calm. Put the trap out on the grass and open the door.

    Step back on the safe distance and wait up to 15 minutes so the animal will get used to the environment. If you want to get rid of the rodent faster, take a flashlight and shine the way out.

    Will Rat Poison Kill a Skunk?

    Yes, it might kill a skunk if you use the needed amount of chemicals. There is no special poisons for skunks, but DIY substances include Bromethalin, Antifreeze, Strychnine, or Cholecalciferol. But mind that chemicals may cause a long painful death.

    Get Rid of the Danger Effectively

    I think that skunks may delude themselves with their funny muzzles and fluffy tails. However, they carry so many infections that are especially dangerous for children and pets. That is why I have mentioned only effective, though easy in usage, traps.

    I hope that now you know how to catch a skunk and will follow my tips. Have you ever caught a skunk? What baits have you tried for skunks? Share your experience in the comments, please.

    Removing Skunk Odor

    Here are a few of de-skunking recommendations for you:

    • Act as fast as you can when it comes to removing the skunk odor from yourself, your car, your pet, and other surfaces. The longer you wait, the harder the removal becomes.
    • Do everything in your power to prevent the smell from getting into the house: apply skunk odor remedies outside if possible – otherwise, you may end up living in a stinky home for weeks.
    • The fabric holds skunk smell for long periods of time, so if your clothes have been heavily skunked, discarding them may be the best solution.
    • Don’t forget to wash properly with hot water after applying any skunk odor remover.
