Fighting ants in your yard means that you will have to deal with their hills, in which the colony is situated. You can use chemical pesticides or natural remedies to destroy the colony. Chemical pesticides for outdoor use, such as Orange Guard and Orthox Home Defense, are the most effective. They create an invisible barrier, which poisons the ants that cross it and very soon the whole nest gets infected. Mix a non-repellent pesticide with water and spray it on the ant hills two times a year.
If you don’t want to use chemical pesticides, you may pour warm soapy water into the hill. This way is a little bit less effective, but it can kill the ant hill inhabitants without causing harm to your kids and animals. Still, the risk to your garden plants remains. If you are afraid for their health, use horticultural diatomaceous earth instead: it must be spreaded around the ant hill and on the main ant trails. In a couple of weeks all the ants will be dried out by it.
